how many odd remedies are there for hic-cups?
We have all sorts of cures told to us from eating sugar, holding your breath, drinking water from the wrong side of the cup etc.
I think the secret to ending hiccups is to concentrate on something else.
The two remedies I know of that tend to work incorporate this thought...
1. recall what you ate the previous day's meals
2. put your two pointer fingers infront of your face and hold them as close to gether (tip to tip) as you can without them actually touching. now concentrate on them not touching... the hiccups will stop.
What strange solutions have you tried for curing your hiccups? did they actually work?

My kids swear that a tsp. of sugar cures the hiccups! Grandma got them started on this one. I Think it's just an excuse to get into the sugar. (like they need any more!)
When I was younger and had the hiccups, I had a co-worker look at me in a mean, doubtful way. I turned red, and told him I had the hiccups. He just responded, "I don't believe you. PROVE IT!" Well, I tried, but they wouldn't come. Kind of like that squeak that disappears when you take the car to the mechanic. LOL!
Now, when my kids have the hiccups, I tell them to stop burping, and don't walk in front of me, because they really stink! They get all flusted and wonder why I'm referring to burps and toots. :) Makes them laugh that the hiccups go away.
so, in essence, you are right. Do what you can to get your mind off those silly hiccups. AND if you have them, stay away from me, because I swear they are contagious!! LOL!

When my younger daughter was about 7 she would get the hiccups often and it would sometimes really annoy her. After trying the usual remedies unsuccessfully, I used to say, "go stick your head in a bucket full of water and count to 7000...slowly" She'd think about it, grin or laugh and say "Mu-um!!!" and the hiccups would be gone. After a while it no longer worked so I said "I'll give you $10,000 if you don't stop". Her avariciousness showing, her eyes sparkled as she thought about this and her hiccups had stopped. About 5 minutes later they started again. She said, "You owe me $10,000."
I didn't bother after that and she rarely had them too. Years later when she was in her twenties, she said to me one day...in all seriousness, "You still owe me that $10,000." LOL.

haha. thank you for sharing a funny story. I love the Mu-um.... isn't that the way they all say it?
I don't know what it is, but hiccups did not really bother me as a kid, but now as an adult they are really hard and painful, and at the end of each drawn out hiccup there is a slight belch. man they hurt! my husband has the same troubles with them now too. Glad I do not get them very often.

drinking water has always worked for me. but i have heard that scaring a person with hiccups helps cure it.
one strange cure (at least for babies with hiccups) i was told by our elders was to put a wet small piece of tissue paper/napkin/cotton and place it on the baby's forehead. i found that it usually works. but i think it's mostly because the baby focuses more on what is on his/her forehead that he/she forgets about the hiccups.

I remember when I was in school and someone got the hiccops in class, my teacher would say, "Shhh! so and so has the hiccops, let's listen!" As soon as everyone would focus their attention on the hiccoper, the hiccoping would stop. I guess emmbarrassment stops them.
But I also remember giving my child a teaspoon of sugar and it ALWAYS worked. I am not lying, it really worked!

My husband also found a cure that worked for me.
Sneak up behind the hiccuper and startle the bejabbers
out of them., they will jump and gasp but they will
quit hiccuping lol but it does work.

My all time favorite is scaring the life out of someone. I try this with my kids (HEHE evil I know) but alas, it does not work. What works for me and now my kids too, is to breathe deeply. Very slowly, take a deep breath in, hold it for a second or two, then slowly exhale. After a few times, voìla, they are gone !!

We have always been told that drinking water helps hiccups.I have tried it successfully many times but there are times when drinking water only fills up my tummy and my hiccups don't stop/.I just leave them alone until they subside. It is very annoying though.Your tip of diverting the mind with somehting very different is a good one.It certainly helps when one is depressed.

scaring yourself was the weirdest "cure" i'd heard.
breathing in a paper bag supposedly works too (kind of like hyperventilating).
sugar usually does work for me,if nothing else though..

the only thing that ever worked for me is to drink a glass of water while my daughter cups her hands over my ears and presses on them. For some reason that works. My friend taught me that trick and it does work!

the only cure that works ALL THE TIME for me is to have someome surprise you. if you see someone with a hiccup, hide behind something and jump out and scare the living daylights out of them.
this works ALL THE TIME. promise.
