"Health experts have warned that images of super-skinny models in the media are sending a poor message to girls." Negative body images can lead young women into unhealthy eating patterns and eating disorders. What are your thoughts. Do you think underweight models should be banned from runways?

I think a lot of the female models look unhealthy when they look so thin! Added to a models requirements should be a weight limit! Take care Swtrose.

I agree that there should be a healthy weight requirement.

I do think that these toothpick thin models are sending our youth a very unrealistic image to try to live up to ...the damage to their self-image because they weigh as much as a straw instead...well....you get my meanings...LOL I do think that the fashion world needs to "get real"....there are people of every shape and size...and the models should reflect that...I truly think that the fashion industry would actually thrive if they were bold enought to think this way instead of the "fantasy people" we see on the run-ways....hehe

Exactly, my friend...most models because of their size cause women to feel "fat" or unattractive compared to their anorexic sleekness.... Seeing a average sized woman would change the way the females of the world tend to view themselves.... Great topic, Swtrose....

Put a size ten or 12 woman on that runway and she'll sell clothes.

Personally I think underweight models are not pretty at all. I don't think they should be banned though- We do have freedoms- It's like banning a heavy girl from the runway- and we also have plus sized models- I think it is the parents responsibility to show their daughters a healthy lifestyle- that these girls are unhealthy- I have a 10 year old daughter- she is a bit chunky in the tummy- but as she gets taller it is going! Just like me as a child- I tell her she is beautiful the way she is- Most of her friends are smaller than her- They are petite things- I don't hear her saying- I'm fat- I need to lose weight- She is watching portions and eating healthier- which I like- Underweight models have no effect on my daughter-

Well, I don't think thin models should be banned. It's not a crime to be very thin, after all. BUT, I don't think it should be an absolute requirement for runway models to be extremely thin either. If they happen to have a slightly different body type then that should also be accepted. Just because something might be sending a certain message to girls doesn't mean they have to listen. I try to stay thin because that's my preferred body type. If being curvy and plump suddenly came back into style, I would still want to be thin regardless of what everyone else was doing. I have plenty to eat though, so I don't think there is anything wrong with being a bit underweight as long as the methods are reasonable (as in, eating healthy foods and not throwing up...) Some people are just naturally skinny.

Hm, well... I still don't think they should necessarily be banned, but it would be better to have more adequate medical exams and such. If a girl is showing signs of SEVERE sickness due to her weight, then yes she should be removed from the workplace (in this case, runway/dressing room/whatever) until she is able to get her health under control. I guess it's likely that a lot of people in the industry 'look the other way' when girls are showing signs of getting sick, so staying healthy should be taken more seriously.

No, I don't think underweight models should be banned in the runways. I hope that their manegers would just tell them to stop beating themselves up by not eating or vommiting after eating their meals. And I just hope that theses runway models would make their bodies better because it is better when they don't look so skinny.
