Where my wife works at the owners mother is the weekday cook. She also doesn't drive so I drive her home every night. She is from Egypt and doesn't speak very good English. She is also a huge pack rat collecting anything and everything she can that's free or next to free. I'm talking she has 3 TVs in her bedroom on her dresser. She has taken home so many rugs and carpet chunks also. Every day she has something to take back to her 2 BR apartment. Today too the cake and I cracked up when I realized the old saying, "Everything but the kitchen sink". Well, yup you guessed it, she brought home a sink. Now that's hilarious. I've always loved that saying now it has actually fit to a point. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Awwww.. how sweet of you to take her back and forth. I would venture to guess she saw some pretty hard times at one point in her life and therefore packrats. I know my grandma was like that. She would have literally 3 outdoor storage barns that she had filled to the ceiling with stuff. You honest to God could find anything out there. It was actually scary. I have no clue what they did with it when she passed because my grandfather married quickly afterwards and the woman he married sorted through and took what she wanted and had the rest hauled off. I'm sure most of it was truly junk, especially things like her 800 zillion canned goods that had to be a million years old! LOL But I will never forget that anytime you needed something strange, Gram could find it!

Everybody has to have a sink so that all the chores in the kitchen can be cleaned up to leave the kitchen looking spock and span otherwise we would all get that dreaded sinking feeeling. Have a nice day from Deeeky.

I put 'o' instead of 'i' because apparently the word with an 'i' in it is offensive !!!

When I was new in this town there was a man in the neighborhood from Poland, friendly guy. He was divorced, owned the property just off the alley from his ex-wife. His house was just sort of a shanty. Mr.Rygas worked for a company that had a lot to do with the construction industry and he would salvage stuff. Lo and behold, while he lived in his little shack, he built a nice ranch style house around it, with his salvaged materials.Never had to take a loan. He did buy fixtures and stuff new, probably at cost, due to connections, but he sure knew how to pinch those pennies and make a life for himself. I wounder if the mother is planning on building herself a better place, one piece at a time?

A lot of the smller items she takes back to Egypt once a year with her for the rest of her brothers and sisters and their families. But the appliances I'm sure the family sells in Egypt as they fetch a dandy price. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I know people from my childhood like this. My family were kind of poor, but not so poor that we needed to do this. Other members of my family collected stuff though. My uncle would collect anything that was free, clothes, household utensils, furniture, whatever. They ended up quite wealthy! What is this women going to do with three TV's? I mean, you can't watch all three at once. It sounds like it has become an chronic obsessive disorder with her.

She had all 3 stacked on top of each other. And yes she would have all 3 on at once. No volume as she doesn't undersytand English enough to watch TV though. Hah!!! She takes a lot back to Egypt every year though. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

LOL, grandpa. Your wife reminded me of an old aunt I have. She loves to collect empty bottles. A few days earlier, she even showed me a number of boxes full of her collection. She said its a waste of things to throw those empty bottles. I don't know what she intended to do with it. I normally collect bottles and sell it to the junk shop. My house has no more spaces for those bottles anymore.

And I thought I was a pack rat! That's too funny! It's really sweet of you to give her a ride every night. I like old sayings and it's pretty nice when you can actually fit a saying into one of life's "episodes".

I know a few people that pack rats. I don't understand the need to keep things like that. Not unless you plan on selling them to make money. Otherwise what good is it to have all those laying around and getting in the way. To me..I see them as a fire hazard.

I wonder when & how that old saying came about and why the kitchen sink? Is it because, during those days it was the only modern thing in the house and perhaps the most expensive? One is actually allowed to have carte blanche (does it include the wife? LOL!) but not just the sink. I love anything that is free too and would always get my freebies whenever there is one.

lol my twin sister does the same thing. She moved from Washington state to Idaho and she had two semi trailors full of stuff. Pluse all the stuff in her home. She now takes stuff out of the semis when she needs then. She has two huge refergators which are for food grade kitchers, she also must have the kitchen sink to go into the good grade kitchen. LOL. She has two home refredgators one inside and one in the garage and one huge freeze for meet. Now I can see having two fridges, or one freezer and one fridge but not all three. That is not including all the food grade stuff she has. She has never opened up a restaurant you would think with the stoves, and stuff she could open a restaurant.

Many years ago mom & dad worked the Bingo hall at the local Moose Lodge. Dad saved every single box from the pull tabs and he's stored junk in them over the years. The last time I went to the farm I threw out about 50 of these boxes. He would save the condiments from restaraunts, He'd save matches, coasters, pencils, napkins, pencils, you name it if it was free he'd save them forever. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I had to laugh at this story as it reminded me of my childhood and one brother that ALWAYS came home with things he "found". Finally, in exasperation one day, my father told him if he ever found "the kitchen sink" don't bring it home.

That is so cute. You really have me LOL with that. I have a hard time getting rid of things and would love to be able to get everything I can that is free. But, I just don't have room for it and even if I did, I'd never be able to keep everything clean. So, did you get to carry the sink to her apartment for her?

My mom is like this women but not quite as bad. She keeps a lot of things and can't stand to get rid of them. I asked her one day why she kept all the things she does and her response was you never know when you might need it. Some of the things that she kept there is no way there would be a use for them. But she is my mom and I love her dearly so I didn't say anything else about it. I think it would be interesting to meet this women. It is very nice of you to drive her home at night.

That's very nice of you to take your wife's boss home every nite. I can also agree with you on the pack rat bit. I knew someone who was a major pack rat. The whole house and garage was loaded from floor to ceiling with stuff that was actually junk. Plastic lids off of Country Crock containers, coffee cans, plastic tubs of all sizes, etc etc. I was to help her clean house one day. I stood in the middle of it all and wondered where in the heck to start. lol

LOL that is so funny. I don't know how people can live like that. I am somewhat of a pack rat but I know when to stop. We have a spare bedroom in our home that I call our walk in closet. (living in a mobile home we don't have a basement/attic/or garage neither do we have much closet space) so this one room is used for storage more or less. I only say I am somewhat of a pack rat because that is what that one room reminds me of.LOL!
