How do you have fun at work?

Like many other people out there I often get bored at work doing the same task over and over again. It all gets to become very mundane and entirely banal. In hopes of making it a little easier for each of us to get through the workday, I thought it would be great if we could all exchange tips for ways to have fun while at work. I'll start us off: My suggestion is borrowed (lovingly) from the Seinfeld TV show. Pick one person at work to be your Newman. What this basically means is that everytime you encounter this person, you say, "Hello Newman..." (note replace Newman, with thier name) But the trick here is to say the name of your co-worked with an much contempt as humanly possible while keeping a straight face. Try it, I dare you not to bust out laughing. Plus this person will be in total bewilderment. It's great way to have a little fun at work. So what's your suggestion?

LOL! I have already been in that business, filmbuff! when I was at job (btw I am studying now). My group's job was a sort of consultative type, a link between design and production departments, working on preventive measures to reduce product rejections etc etc. It was a little larger group and there were times when at least some people were free having nothing to do as such. So we used to get at someone's desk and a stream of jokes will follow causing enough noise of laughter for our boss to interrupt. We also had chess championships (on computer) during work, off course timing was never fixed and would be adjusted according to availability of competing sides. Then we used to have unusual collective tea breaks, ordering something special from outside, when it was sure that for a considerable time there is no possibility of any call for work. We also had a rather regular academic activity (besides work), in which case one of the officers would prepare a lecture on some subject and will deliver it to other colleagues during the week days whenever we were free for at least an hour. subjects included were mainly from engineering theory but some times it was about economics, satellites, GPS, Alternative fuels etc i.e. related to engineering field but practically. Then, you know every subordinate has something funny to say about the boss, however great the boss might be, so you know... There were occasionally some other activities which I won't even dare tell here, there are some I can tell but I am afraid my response will get inconveniently longer:-)

In fact longer will be painful to digest, with so much stuff to swallow. I thought, one would get bore reading too much otherwise I would have shared. That would be interesting to play the Call of Duty.

Long is fine, long is good kamran, thanks for the posting. It certainly seems you've found several great ways to have fun at work. I remember working in the IT department of a certain insurance company. All the IT people would often play Call of Duty and the like off the companies server when we were board. Much fun.

It was fun to have all these highly paid technicians sitting around playing first person shooter games on the companies server. But we were *the IT guys* we could do whatever we wanted. I used to play as a Nazi character and everytime I will kill one of my co-workers I would shout, "No SOUP for you!"

Well a certian job that I had, I surfed the internet, as much as I could anyway, or chatted on messnger. when I couldn't do that I would take a book to read or I would color or do origami. Nothing is more fun then making origami animals and throwing them at people lol.

You like it Filmbuff? Its another one that I created, my oldest said that she got tired of looking at by butterfly and rose. AI haven't decided yet wether I really want to keep it or not, well see. Oragami can be very relaxing once you get the folds down right. I taught my mom how to do it, and gave her a book on it. She has to have surgery on her hand and the occpataional theripst said that it was a good way for her to get her dexterity back. and of course throwing things at people is always a good way to stay calm lol.

I've never done oragami, but I've always admired it. I don't have any artistic talent when it comes to drawing, or arts and crafts so I doubt I would be any good at it. I like it, I'm impressed that you made it yourself. What program did you use, and how did you make it? Truthfully, I like the butterfly one better, it's more playful and colorful. Yes, it is always good stress reliever to throw things, throwing them at people is just an added plus.

Oragami! I bet it was fun to toss paper animals and stuff at people and surfing the internet from work is always a plus. As a sidenote, I almost didn't recognize you with your new avatar.

That's not a bad gig if you're at a computer all day. You can literally earn, while you um, ah... earn. ;) Thanks for posting nicolec.

That's what I'm talking about. Nothing like making money for posting and making money. It's a win win. Except don't tell the boss!

Your secret is safe with me. Try the "Hello Newman" line on your boss the next time you see him..on second thought pick an underling.

Kidnap someone's stuffed animal and hold it for ransom. You could even take a picture and give it to that person ;)

I don't know about stuffed animals, not that many of those at my work. But maybe I can try that with their stapler. That's it. See how they get through their day without thier stapler!

I sing. I don't even realize it until someone starts singing along or "requests" something LOL. It makes everyone smile and sometimes we play name that tune! Or guess the artist.

Singing is helpful if you're in an environment where you are able to do so. Last time I sang at work, they paid me to stop. Score! It sounds like you are much more talented than I. So what is the most requested song they ask you to sing at work?

Down by the River! LOL They say can you sing down by the river! anyway I grew up with music. I don't even realize I am doing it most of the time. But others do join in! My favorite to sing are the old ones like "Got an Angel on my shoulder" or others like that my dad taught me, most of them are from WWII.

I have the most fun in class. Oh, maybe I should have started that I teach in a school. lol. Yea, the staff room can get quiet and claustrophobic at times especially when I have a free period. Usually I am back in class if it is their recess break and just talk to them about other issues not academically related.

Having fun with your students is good, there is lots of good oppertunities for making learning fun in a classroom envirement. Talking about other issues will help to break up the monotony as well. Thanks for commenting vampoet.
