Sensory issues in preschooler

I have a 4 year old son whom I believe has some sensory issues. I have read about them extensively. He is starting preschool in August. I am worried, because his father & I deal with him on a daily basis according to his needs. He is not spoiled, he just has good parents. He has to be told way ahead of time about transitions that will be occuring during the day, and then intermittently before it actually occurs. We feel it is due to SID.

Hi there doulakk, how are you and yours? I work for a Head Start Program and I hope that you need not worry. Is your child going into a Daycare Center or Head Start? He will be evaluated if the teachers see a problem. Your doctor should also document your concerns and your son will be evaluated. It is a good thing, early intervention is the best cure. Take care, I wish you all good things for your son, take care...I hope that you will keep us posted on your son's progress, God Bless Him...

I don't understand. He's 4 and you have to remind him to do things? I don't know many 4 year olds that will even do what you tell them regardless of when you remind them. Can you give some examples?

Welcome to myLot, and I think you will find lots of support and shared ideas here. You have already gotten some good advice. Let the preschool know what is going on.Have a pre school screening or evaluation, you can learn about those through your county health department. In our community we have Head Start combined with our special needs. We also have At Risk class rooms in the schools for children your son's age who might have some problems that they ( the school) needs to learn to manage. You and your husband have already found out what works. I hope the school listens to you.

Contact the preschool and let them know about his sensory issues. They should be able to arrange for you to take him to the school and see what will be his classroom and meet his teacher before hand, which makes the transition easier. My son has Autism which comes with sensory issues (among other things), and that helped tremendously. They can also help him with his daily schedule in school with a picture schedule -- it helped my son a great deal.

Have you talked to the family doctor about this? Here in Canada once your kids are school aged there are many people who can help with school problems. My youngest had a speach problem so I found out she could have a person come to her pre school and work with her to get her where she needed to be. I happy to say she starts kindergarten in Sept. and the extra help payed off. Have you spoke to the teacher about your concerns? Good luck
