How do you keep bugs out of laundry?

I want to hang my clothes out on the line, but aside from the maddening chance of bird's speckling my laundry, I also have a bug problem. They are little flea looking things that sit on my clothes (towels especially) and chew on them the whole time they are trying to dry.
Is there a way to prevent this? Put vinegar or something in the wash or something maybe? I dunno, but I'd really love some tips on how to let nature dry my clothes.

I know that melaleuca oil will act as a repellent. You can get some at a health food store and put one or two drops oil the wash. I won't know the strength of what you buy so you might have to adjust and try different rates. Avon skin so soft products also repel bugs but I do not know if they have one that will work in the laundry. You might also consider a citranilla candle out in the yard while the laundry is out.
