How to train your cat.

I recently found a cat in my yard and want to adopt him. What should I do and how do I train him to use his litter and not scratch sofas and things of the like (I've had bad experiences in the past)

Usually they just use the litter box. There isn't much training involved. When a cat starts to scratch something you do not want it to, move it to something it can scratch. There are a lot of items for sale they could scratch. They make recycled cardboard scratch items that have cat nip in it. My cats love them.

I forgot to mention, if this is an outside cat, it may not use the litter box. It might go to the door. If the cat is an un-neutered male, expect it to spray. Male cats like to mark their territory this way.
