How to connect net to my linux operating system,please anyone help me?

hi friendz,i am using two operating systems.One is windows xp and the other is UBUNTU LINUX.Net is connected to xp and i now i want to work net connection using UBUNTU LINUX.I don knw how to give the ip address and all.Net company fellow came and told i don knw.But please anyone of you can help me to connect net to UBUNTU LINUX.
