Flattering or toadying?

Do you flatter? why or why not? when do you think you need to flatter? In what extent do you or your friends flatter? Whom do you flatter to, your boss, your boyfriend/girlfriend or police officer when you got caught speeding driving? Or do you flatter to someone who you deal with for a certain purpose? And the last, most importantly, is how can you tell the different between flattering and praising??? I know this is our very daily-based experiences we have to deal with and how do you handle it???
