Every year 23400 people in the US are arrested on murder charges. About 60 percent of big city murders are solved whereas about 75 percent or rural murders are solved. Statistics released in 1996 show that Americans are murdering each other a lot less. However shootings and violent crimes are on the rise. How can these conflicting facts be explained? Well, more people are being shot more often than ever but today's high tech trauma centres are bringing them back to life. It's not that Americans are killing each other less but that medical advances are making it harder to keep them dead. Top Ten Most Common Causes of Death in the United States 1. Heart Disease 2. Cancers 3. Cerebrovascular Diseases 4. Pulmonary Diseases 5. Accidents 6. Pneumonia & Influenza 7. Diabetes 8. HIV (AIDS) 9. Suicide 10. The second chemical agent, Pancuronium Bromide, a muscle relaxer, follows. This causes the inmate to stop breathing due to paralyses of the diaphragm and lungs. Finally, Potassium Chloride is injected, stopping the heart. The murder capital of the world is Colombia where the murder rate is ten times higher than that in the united states. Less than 2% of the murders there are ever investigated and less than 2% of those that are investigated are ever solved. This BJS Special Report, a survey of murder cases disposed in 1988 in the courts of large urban US counties, found that 16% of murder victims were members of the defendant's family: 6.5% were killed by their spouses, 3.5% by their parents, 1.9% by their own children, 1.5% by their siblings, and 2.6% by other relatives. Women were 45% of the victims in murders involving family members but 18% of victims in other murders. Among family murder defendants, 35% were female versus 7% among nonfamily defendants. Women were over half of the defendants (55%) in only one category of family murder: parents killing their offspring. Firearms were used in 42% of family murders, compared to 63% of nonfamily murders.
