Hi. My dog was adopted, and I quickly learned that he is very protective of me. Whenever someone new comes to my house, he needs to be introduced to the people while on a leash. Otherwise, he can bite if he doesn't feel the environment is secure. He is also quite the bark-aholic when he views action outside of the home (i.e. walkers, mailman, trucks). Thankfully, he is resting at my side for the moment! ;.D

I have a dog that barks and a dog that doesn't and neither one of them bite. I know my dogs so I am confident in what I say. Barking and biting are mutually exclusive. Some one said that one day and it stuck. It is an old wive's tale. It all depends on the breeding of the dog and how it was trained.

Well, I never have heard of this one before. If a dog starts to bark, I run away screaming and not look back.

This is very much a false concept.
First it depends on the dog. Most dogs have not been trained and just bark at anything that move. You say "Boo" to them and they run away.
A dog which has been trained as a guard dog will bark at you as a warning. If you say "Boo" to him... he will attack you.
The guard dog which sneak on you without barking is the most dangerous. He is highly trained and his job is to capture you at all costs for trespassing. He will kill you if he has to. From my own experience...the most scary one is the Doberman.

I'm like you. I don't believe that saying is always true. I have one dog that constantly barks at anyone that comes up to the house. We always say that her bark is worse than her bite but I know that if she felt threatened or thought we were in danger that she would attack. It's the guard dog in her. I think that mainly it depends on the dog but I feel that in any given circumstance that any dog will bite.
