How to get rid of a mouse ??? please help

Ok i think a mouse or small bird has fallen down the chimney and is trapped behind a wooden board ( fake fireplace ) type thing . I can hear it scratching about and its really freaking me out but what can i do to get rid of it . I cant take the board down because if i do it might just run out then i really would need extra underwear !!! My partner wants to spray deoderant behind there and gas it out , i think thats cruel so i wont do that .
Any ideas please ???

LOL no hon sorry can help you there...apart from u could get a cat, i remember last year we had a small tree rat in our house you should of seen mum and me both armed with brooms and standing on the sofas to get the horror out..he was very cheeky kept peeking out from under the sofa...took us 2 days..lol...good luck

Ben ended up going to bed early leaving me all alone with the beasty behind the fire place, after sitting there for half an hour listening to it rustle and gnaw at the board i ended up following him up to bed, i have come to the conclusion i can either feed it under the edge of the board and keep it as a pet or just ignore it and leave it to do whatever it does, i think i will go for the later one.

If you can take the board off slightly and have your partner ready with a garbage bag or something so it can drop in there and then just take it outside.
