This computer is always slow! Slow slow slow... i thought SNAIL MAIL was slow! So how can I get faster downloads without having to buy fancy DSLs and Broadbands... and without needing System Restore all the time? Recently our computer crashed, we have to download a BUMCH of things back. Luckille we have our internet back. I dunno where I'd be without that. So help me out... What is the best thing to use or do... Thanks!

well, i don't really see any other way but getting better connection. I think that's actually the key to have faster download.

Actually sometimes it isn't the connection. My sister in law has DSL connection but becuase her computer was having problems it ran slow. So it is sometimes the computers fault. It might have to do with how old your computer is and the memory and what type of modem you have. Mine is slow because I have only 133MHZ and a 14.4 bps modem and it is a old computer I had to updaye from a windows 95 to a 98.

That's not the problem. A fast connection speed can be made to be just as slow as dial-up, but it usually has to do with security software and/or spyware. Actually, even a 486 (which as what Windows 95 was built for) would see a difference in speed between DSL and dial-up. There is positively no comparison between the two.

You are right about the modem. If you're using dial-up, and you have a 14.4 kbps modem, you won't even get the full speed of dial-up. Broadband connections usually have an external modem, then connect to a high-speed ethernet device on your machine with an RJ-45 cable. Dial-up uses the old, modular RJ-11.

I wish I knew myself because I always thought I had the slowest computer in the world..lol It drives me batty it is so slow. I have tried a few things sometimes they work sometimes not. Do you have a registry cleaner downloaded, a adaware cleaner, and a virus protection? I have also downloaded something called CCLEANER and it helps clean alot off computer. You should take off the things you do not use on your computer or things you rarely use that can be put back on wihen needed. you can even try out www.stopsign.com/free it might help as well. and defragmating atleast once a month is good. Try the error nukker out it might fix some things. Well I wish you luck..

I downloaded AVG and found that it is pretty simple to use and that it is a good one. I also downloaded it to my sisters and it found 126 viruses on hers no wonder she was having major problems with it and I also downloaded a registry cleaner called Eusing Free Registry Cleaner. It helped alot. Thanks for all the information I appreciate it and thanks for the help and I am sure I am not the only one who will need it or use it,again thanks

The only thing you get for free from stopsign.com is the scanner itself. To have infections removed, you still have to buy the software. It's a legitimate company, but their marketing techniques are eerily similar to ransomware. CCleaner is good; I use it myself, along with Free Internet Eraser. Make sure you, or someone savvy, take a good look at CCleaner's settings before using it. The default settings are rather aggressive. FIE's settings aren't so bad, but some people might find it annoying to have their clipboard and open/save settings cleaned. :S Yes to the monthly defrag, yes to the registry cleaner, but make sure you use a conservative reg cleaner. It's far better to leave a few orphaned entries behind than it is to remove vital ones. Registry Mechanic is a popular cleaner, more popular than it deserves to be IMO. I stopped using it the first time it took someone's machine to the horrible blue screen of Windows Wipeout! I recommend ToniArts EasyCleaner. For a 133 MHz computer running Windows 98, you need light security software. The good news is that Windows 98, being built on the FAT32 (File Allocation Table, 32-bit) file system is less vulnerable than NTFS (Net Technology File System) operating systems like 2000 and XP. I still recommend a basic firewall to keep hackers from accessing your files, but you might actually try using a beefed-up hosts file instead of antispyware (you still need antivirus). This won't slow down W98 or Me at all (it might slow down 2K or XP on some machines). Check this out: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm For antivirus, AVG would be easy on your machine. For a firewall, it's more complicated. One of the lightest on resources would be FeeBe WebWall, but it's a server firewall. You could use it, but you would still want to make sure file and printer sharing are turned off. If you know what I'm talking about, you're in good shape. WebWall is available for free here: http://www.feebe.com/webwall/index.htm If you want to try something else, you might try the old Kerio ( http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/page7.html#Kerio%20Personal%20Firewall ), or the last version of Sygate ( http://www.simtel.net/product.download.mirrors.php?id=53687 ). Hope this helps!

I would try suggest to look up online and there might be something like a Download Accerlator. Those could come in handy for dial-up users. I remember when I had dial-up, I got something just like that and it worked out rather well. Try a yahoo search on that and see what you can find that's free. Hope that helps.
