Do you use big words around your kids?

Today I asked my daughter if she felt glum, and she gave me a strange look as if I'd grown an extra head off the side of my neck. And, then I realized that glum was one of the words she hasn't yet added to her vocabulary. So, I rephrased the sentence. And, it made me think. Do all parents occasionally use big words around their kids? Sometimes my spouse and I will use big words that we know she doesn't understand. It's our way of talking in code. Do you do that? Does it help you talk about adult stuff like bills without worrying the kids?

My husband and I are always trying to use new words around our son. He is very inquisitive and will 99% of the time ask us what that means and learn a new word! The other day we were playing a game and he learned the word "participant". It is also fun to watch them say these new words :)

That really does not work too good for us...LOL # of our choldren are grown in their late 20's and our 5 yr. old thinks he is 20 as well...LMAO We never used baby talk and he has an extensive vocabulary...if you use a word he does not understand he will quickly tell you...."what does that mean??" or "I don't understand"..... We have to talk privately to not worry him about things...he is very attentive....LOL

My parents raised us on big words. They didn't want to patronize us by leaving us out of the discussion, or making us feel like idiots. The odd time Mom would discuss our Christmas presents with her parents in Danish, but that's the only time she ever hid anything from us.

Sometimes we use new words but our son gives us a curious look. He learns things quickly so it is difficult to use new words.
