What would you never consider wearing to work? Why?

I would not wear dangling earrings, and necklaces to my jobs. The part time job has this in its dress code, but I also would not to my school job. I love dangly earrings and other jewelry, but if you are working with people with behavioral issues, these items are at risk to be injurious to the wearer. The earrings can be jerked out. I saw a four year old nearly strangle a case worker once. I work around children and adults with the potential of acting out violently.

In that case I think trousers or slacks were much more professional.

I think a person's dress code should always compliment the occasion. You don't go to church in your golf clothes and visa versa. If you work with small babies in a hospital don't wear watches, dangling necklaces and 20Ct diamond clusters, wear a pocket watch or a broach watch and no other jewelry.
I personally have only a few items of jewelry, I don't like a ring on each finger, our 6 earing's like ducks in a row in my ears! I have one necklace with my husbands name, written in hieroglyphics's, that he bought for me in Egypt. My wedding band, a ring on my little finger with 3 tiny diamonds, and a ring on my right hand with one diamond and three small one's next to it. I only have two sets of earring's, the one set is a small diamond stud that I wear everyday, and a half round gold set for when I go out. I guess it is quite save to have showered you with my 'jewelry collection'! lol! Not worth robbing me!

It seems every piece you have is precious. I like the idea of your necklace. Did you, or do you, work with small infants?

When I worked with visiting nurse assoc, I wouldn't wear my engagement ring to work. Not because I was afraid I'd lose it, but because I was afraid of bringing contamination home (it'd always poke through latex gloves and rip them because of the type of setting) and I was afraid patients might get scratched with it. I also wouldn't wear any jewelry (not even stud earrings) except for my watch and my name tag. I can relate to what you said about the jewelry with violent people and people with behavioral issues. When I worked with severely mentally challenged patients, they would grab at that kind of thing unprovoked. I too have seen ear-lobes ripped on others because of patients like that. Safety first!!

Some people are unwilling to give up anything to be professional, but you did well. You must be practical and safe.

I wouldn't wear my jewelry at work. Nor would I wear good clothing. Cleaning products can ruin both.

I also wouldn't wear anything that was too revealing.

I teach nursing at our local collge. Needless to say there is a strict dress code for days that we are at the hospital. One thing that nurses are taught, but ignore once they graduate is NOT to wear the fake fingernails, bracletes and raised-set rings. We don't allow our stuents to wear these yet the minute they graduate and the hospital hires them...they all start. They do this knowing the dangers and risks of infection and patient injury. I would not wear any of those things, even if the school dress code wasn't in place! On days that I teach in the classromm, I wouldn't wear shorts or jeans. I feel that I need to look some-what professional when I teach. I typically wear khaki slacks, black slacks or skirts. (with shirts of course!)

When I have worked in nursing homes I have noticed a serious lack of morale when the dress code slips. Good nursing instructors teach about the nails, bracelets, etc. So do good DON's. The best one I worked with also forbade brightly colored underwear that showed through white pants! Can you imagine having to tell someone that! She was very good.
