When should you start telling your kids that Easter Bunny and Santa Claus are not real?

You know, I don't remember when my eldest admitted that she knew the truth. I remember every time she asked me if I was Santa Claus I would always say, "I can't afford to buy all those things." But I really don't remember when the truth came out. With my youngest she had lost a tooth. I went into my kitty jar in my room to get a toonie ($2 coin) and my jar was completely empty. I put two Loonies under my daughter's pillow and then left the jar on the kitchen table with a note on it that SOMEONE owed me 20 bucks. The guilty party put the 2 Loonies back in the jar so I confronted her about stealing and then the jig was up. She is ten now and that was probably about 2 years ago. My oldest daughter didn't admit the truth until about the age of 11 I think. She is 14 now. I never TOLD them the truth, they just came to me with the truth and the game was over. I gotta tell you, I was relieved. I get so tired of trying to buy enough presents every Christmas when I don't have any money. Now my kids understand why they only get a couple of gifts.

Amazing how kids have such a big capacity for understanding the truth even at such a young age. But, most pick it up from their class mates. Not all kids are told about Santa Claus and such and go around telling all the other kids he's not real. That's what they did in my first grade class anyway. Imagine my surprise when I found out there were no leprechauns, either!

I never told them...my 30 year says she still believe's in Santa Claus....LOL I always taught my children that these characters were real BUT that all of the Mommies and Daddies were supposed to help them...it is part of being a grown up to offer assistance to people who are over-whelmed... So while Santa Claus does live at the North Pole, and his elves make toys...they are distibuted many different ways because he really appreciates the help...He gets his letters but communicates with the parents to ensure that we are all on the same page... This always prevented any unusal activity from becoming an arguement.....hope that this made sense to you... We do things alittle differently at my house...LOL

That's actually a pretty good idea. Sort of like saying, "Santa clause emailed Mommy your wish list." I might try that one. My little girl loves the computer and email anyway. She'll love the idea of getting an email from Santa.
