In an institution, do you go out of your way to do extra work, more than your allotted duty? I find that people working in Institutions, specially Government Institutions, stick to their work, they will not do anything extra, saying it is not my duty... for example - closing the running taps, or asking people who litter to throw things in the dustbin. They say it is the duty of administrators and does not affect me any way. I find this apathy towards your workplace very shocking. How about you ?

Dear dbhatti, when I was young and started working I used to help others in completing their jobs because on those days I wanted to learn all kind of jobs related to function of an organisation. I had also worked in different capacities in different organisations. By working hard only you can learn all kind of jobs. Government instituions the culture of not doing anything beyond their allotted duty is a culture handed over by their predecessor and they follow it.

Well it happens with most of the people because of workload some time demands to follow such things! And in Indian condition this is a thing people are doing since independence!
What i do is my responsibilities. If I have use some thing which needs to be put in dustbin then its my duty. As far as my understanding is concerned, when ever I found waste things in room or office kitchen I used to throw it in the dustbin... That's all!

I have had people tell me that I am to please. I see myself as a perfectionist. You never know the situation though.
There could have been a time when one of them could have been doing something extra and ended up maybe doing something wrong or getting into it with a client, so they could have been told, stick to what you were trained to do and nothing more.
Then, there is always the pride issue. You feel that someone should do something and because it is not in their job description it is beneath them.

I have always been doing the extra type of works from my childhood. It was my inherent character to do additional work, not only at my office, but at other common public places too..
There are many times, I have closed the taps, switched off the unattended tvs, switched off the fans when no one using it etc at many public places. I feel very bad when I see such things happening around and everyone moving around it without even worrying about it.
I have heard some comments about my this character, but I think I will continue to do this forever. Even at my work, I will always do additional that what I have been asked to do for. Many times, it was appreciated too..
