Dishwashers - How can I get rid of the smell?

I have never cleaned our dishwasher since we moved in last year and now there is an odour that I can smell a day or two after I last used it. I would of thought that every time you set a cleaning cycle, that it cleans the dishes as well as the dishwasher, keeping it smelling fresh. How can I get rid of this odour? what products do you use to clean your dishwasher? do you take eveything out i.e. the sliding trays and clean those separately or do you put some type of cleaning powder or liquid and set it to a normal or stronger cycle and let it wash itself? The last thing I want to do is break the darn thing so if you have any suggestions, please let me know! thanks in advance!

I unfortunately have never owned a dishwasher, someday would sure like to get one though. You might try reading the owners manual if you still have it. You could also search online and see how to clean them out. I, myself, would probably just pour some bleach in there and run a wash cycle, but I don't know if that is the way to do it.

I might have to ask the landlord for the owners manual as I tried looking for that earlier this week, thinking it might tell me how to keep it clean. Thanks for responding warriorsdaughter!

Hello Maddysmom! I don’t have a dishwasher but my mom does and I can understand your frustration with the stingy odor. What we do is spill about a half cup of “CLOROX” into the bottom tray where it accumulates the drippings from the water and bits of food. It helps with the odor although we do it about every three days. She says that the Clorox gets rid of the germs that cause the odors. I hope this little tad bit of info can help you!

I know this is going to sound a bit strange but for the life of me I can't get to the bit where the bits and peices of food go to. I have tried pulling out the middle gadets and getting to it but it just won't budge. I think i better call the landlord and ask for the manual so I can figure this out. I used vinegar like the previous poster said and it helped somewhat. I am most definitely doing something wrong. Thanks for reminding me to do something about it. Have a nice day liyan and thanks for posting!

i don't have a dishwasher so I'm not qualified to comment on this. most people in my country don't have dishwashers although i have a friend who swears by hers. i suppose if i had to clean one, I'd remove the tray and give it a soapy rinse. and the bottom and insides a clean with a soft cloth. sometimes there is build-up of calcium or whatever from the frequent water contact.
