When I ask that I'm not meaning what is a dream in the sense of can you explain it to me...I'm asking what you think CAUSES dreams or better yet WHY do we have them in the first place...
I personally believe that we have them as a means to connect with our higher self...I'm one of those ppl who believes we HAVE the answers to all of life's so called mysterys, we just for some reason, have forgotten how to connect to that part of ourselves...All the solutions are within us and for the more 'minor' challenges in our lives we find the answers in our dreams...That IMO is their purpose..
What do YOU feel the purpose of our dreams are?

To me dreams are a continue of your thoughts. You however, can not control them because you are 'asleep'. I think that in a sense dreams speak to us to our innerselves, dreams, ambitions, etc... When we are awake have a thought pop into our minds and we feel uncomfortable or uncertain we change our thoughts/shake our heads. But when you are sleeping you wonder off, you are not in control, the true you is speaking.

To me, you are all three correct. I would only add that I also think that sometimes people confuse "dreamtime" with time actually spent connecting with those who have transcended, animal totems, and others that their minds are not yet ready to accept dealing with during awake time. ~Donna
(and then there are the dreams about Johnny Depp, and there is NOTHING spiritual about them!)

Humm...I think dreams are a combination of things. A way to work out our day to day problems, receive enlightenment from our higher selves and/or the other side, to have release our fears, ect.
So basically I guess I think pretty much the same as you do on this subject. I think the world would be a very scary place if we didn't dream. Even though most of the time I wish I didn't dream because mine are usually disturbing and at times makes me sleep worse instead of better! LOL

I have the boring answer of, I think its just the brain does not completely shut down, only parts when we sleep and the dreams are from the parts that are still awake. My dreams are silly and sinceless so I don't want to think they are anything else, because to me that would be scary.

Actually no-one knows for sure. I like your theory. There are both physiological theories and psychological theories put forward for why we dream. I found the 'Contemporary Theory of Dreaming" to be the best explanation for me:

I definately think that dreams are part of your subconsciousness trying to tell you something. One of my first posts on mylot was about a dream that I had acted on and it had turned out to be true.. I do try to analyse dreams as much as I can, but some are just too plain weird.. I'm not sure whether we find answers in our dreams, more like keys to finding answers maybe?
