Pledging - college or military

I was curious about pledging a college sorority or fraternity. There is a new show out that I haven't decided if I watch to watch it or not called "Greek". I've seen Animal House and seen some of the things that are "stereotypical" college pranks. I know hazing isn't allowed anymore, I'm sure some still do it and call it "pledging" or something else, but I am curious about what you might have done or remember things your parents said they did to join into a Greek House or something. I know some military forces (like the Navy Seals maybe) have a special "initiation" they do and I'm curious as to how far some have gone to join into a group like this?
