Fibroid Tumor and Pregnant

I was just told by email this morning a family member who is 8 weeks pregnant (first child), has a fibroid tumor that is 11cms long (about the size of a baby's head) growing in her uterus. I don't know the details on how this all came about and why this was not detected earlier but I wanted to hear from others who may have experienced this. I have heard that fibroid tumors are benign however can cause severe symptoms like heaving bleeding, pain in the abdomin, swelling of the belly and so forth. I am very worried about how this could affect her pregnancy. They seem to think that it is likely it will keep on growing and may cause complications at a later stage of her pregnancy. She is 36 years of age and has only been married a year and a bit now. Has anyone gone through this experience before? I am very worried about her and her baby to say the least and would appreciate any comments from those who have gone through this or know of someone that has. Thanks!

First of my friend - My prayers go out to your family member and to yourself - I know you are very worried and obviously stressed out about this situation! While I am by no means an expert and have never been in this situation - I have a friend who had this condition! Unfortunately the fibroid made it impossible for her to get pregnant but she did a lot of research while she was trying! So Congratulations to your family member - It is fantastic to know she has beaten the fibroid tumour simply by managing to conceive in the first place! There are a few risks, the possibility of kidney infections and the risk of having to deliver early and/or the risk of having breech birth and also the possibility of having to deliver the baby via C-section! There is the possibility of more serious complications but this is EXTREMELY rare and we won't even go there huh? Again I am going to keep you and your family member in my heart and prayers - please let me know how things are going! Love and Hugs xxx

I just pray that her and baby are going to be OK through all of this. -Thanks again mummymo - I'll let you know how it goes if and when I hear any more news. *HUGS*

Oh wow thats such a shame. I use to have them too. And I finally had to have a hystrecomy. I was young when I had it only 28 years old. Thats why I dont have children. But Im okay with that now. I was upset about it years ago. I have my sweet cats who I treat like my children.LOL I dont know what they will do for this family member of yours. But I think she should be okay. I will keep her in my prayers. And please keep us informed on her.

Fibroids are actually growths in the muscle wall of the uterus, and so, thankfully there is no thought of them being a cancer, and needing chemo or radiation. If whe were not pregnant, there would be other things that they could do to stop the fibroid from growing. It feeds on estrogen, so the hormones that are there is why it is probably growing. If she has a good doctor, they will do everything they can to keep her, and the baby safe. I had fibroids, but they were discovered long after my childbearing years. What they did not know about til they went in for them was my endometriosis. It sounds like if your family member was able to conceive, that she is in good reproductive health. I will pray for her, and keep her in my thoughts as well.

Thankyou GardenGerty for the explanation. It really does help to understand it more and because I only know what I have stated above, I'm anxious to find out more about her case, but don't want to burden her with more questions. I do appreciate you sharing with me and am very thankful for your prayers.

I have not personally experienced this, maddysmommy, however, it is not unheard of. If she has a good OB/GYN she should receive the best advice from them. More than likely they will keep a close check on the progression of the size of the tumor for awhile. This is what they usually do. I would hate for her to have to terminate her pregnancy. I know of two cases where the mothers were diagnosed with malignant tumors after becoming pregnant. Both came through it with flying colors. So, take heart, all is not lost. I will be praying for your family member.

Thank you worldwise for sharing with me. It makes me feel a whole lot better to hear that all is not lost. Its frustrating that there is nothing we can do but put her and baby into prayer. I really do appreciate your prayers, thank you.

*hugs* thank you so much liyan for your prayers. We both were very happy for her that she was able conceive but are very worried for her and baby at the same time. Not being able to do anything is really frustrating and at the moment are only able to put her and baby into prayer. I really do appreciate your prayers my friend, it does mean alot:)
