I have Windows XP and I don't know how far I am from being kicked to the curb. I would say that it all depends on what condition your computer is in. If it is in good working condition. I would upgrade, if not, you should probably get a new computer.
I have been thinking about upgrading to Windows Vista, but I will wait for them to improve it a little. It is causing consumers a lot of problems.

Only last year I purchased Windows XP plus MS Office and I am extremely happy with the performance. Though there are newer programmes, I do not wish to change, because I had paid more than $700 for all these packages, including CD writer. I only wish once you buy electronic goods, all future updates should be free!!1

Hi Marcie =)Our computer is also still Windows 98--& I'm still on dial-up (which pretty much sucks) but I have been inquiring about broadband & they still do support windows 98 --though I'm not sure about internet services there in the States...
My suggestion would be to look at other internet services if they also don't support Windows 98 anymore, just do a survey & if most of them don't or won't be supporting this OS soon, then I suggest that you upgrade...especially if your computer can handle the upgrade--maybe you can have it assessed. But if there are still a lot of internet services available to you that will be supporting Win98 for a longer time, maybe you can try switching services in the mean time, maybe even only until you can buy a new computer =)
Hope my suggestion helps! Enjoy your Sunday! =)

Have you had your computer scanned to see if you can handle a higher level of Windows? I would say try to get it checked on that. What type of computer do you have exactly? I might be able to better answer your question that way. When I had to go from 95 to XP, it was a big jump but it wasn't bad.
If your computer can handle a higher level of Windows, I can say go for it and try to do that.

I would get a new one. The old one probably won't run very fast if you upgrade to a new operating system. The new system will take so much more memory that it will slow down your entire system. Plus it is usually a chore to try installing the new system. I've done it several times, with Windows 3.1, Windows 95, and Windows 98. But now I wait until I need a new computer. I am running Windows XP which came on the computer I have. I would never try installing it myself. Computers are much cheaper now, so I would say the only way to go is to upgrade to a whole new computer.

You need not buy a new computer to upgrade your operating system. You can buy a windows XP operating system or you can download a Ubuntu Linux operating system i.e Live CD version for free and write it to the CD
.
I think you'll get Windows XP for a lesser price in E-bay. Even if you can't afford to buy, you need not worry, you can borrow it from any of your friends and install it on your hard disk.
I'm using windows xp service pack-2 and i'm happy with it. I can't update it as its not a valid version that i have. I have all other security software except the Windows updates, so i need not bother.

Well if you have a computer running windows 98 it will probably be cheeper in the long run to buy a new computer than to upgrade the computer and buy a new OS to install on that computer. That does get to be expensive. So my Recomendation is to buy a new computer.

Are you sure that you cannot afford to make some payments for one. Dell allows for making payments. Many places do I think. I am just a loyal Dell customer. You can run your computer without that support. Just will be a bit harder and need more upkeep probably.
I have the new Dell Windows with Vista computer. I think they have another new one already out though. I like mine and hope to keep it running for a long time.

It really depends on your PC...
There are cheap PCs and good PCs.
I have an old bullet proof Intel Pentium 2 MX 350 which I put together in 1999. It is still working today and I am running Windows XP Pro on it for the last 2 years. I was also using ADSL on it. And it has only 192Mb of memory.
Now when I tell this to people... they laugh at me and won't believe me. That's their problem. Yes... of course it is slow. I have a Pentium 4 1.7Ghz and it is twice as fast. But when you consider that the processor is 5 times bigger... twice as fast is really not that impressive.
The problems you are facing by installing Windows XP on an old computer are that you will need to update all your drivers. In most cases... you can find those on the internet for free.
You will need new drivers for your printer, scanner, video card, modem. In some cases... if those are really old... you won't find the drivers for them... and you will be stuck with a scanner, printer, video card not working under XP. That's when you have a problem if you have no money.
You can go and look on the internet right now... before installing XP if you can find all the drivers you need to run your hardware under XP. Simply go to the manufacturer website for your printer, scanner, etc... The thing you are most likely to have problems with is the video card.
Besides that... don't disregard the possibility of buying a second hand computer. They are super cheap if you go in a computer market or someone who specialize in the sale of second hand computers.

What is the processing speed of your computer? You might be able to upgrade it to Windows XP. If the processing speed is high enough you could go up to Windows Vista. I would say try to see if it can be upgrade to Windows XP Home edition. Windows Xp will be supported for another two or three years. Meanwhile then start saving for a new one. I have a Compac Presario Pentium 4 with Windows XP home edition and I am saving for a Mac.
The Compac Presario is okay for everyday, but the sound card in it is not that good.

if your think your computer can handle windows XP then there's no need of upgrading it, but if it's not built to run windows xp then you have no choice but to upgrade or purchase a new one. try upgrading it to Windows ME maybe your internet service will be able to support Windows ME.

Oh honey.. this is so crappy! How can an internet service dictate what operating system you use? If you ask me, this sounds crazy... what has your OS got to do with the ISP?!!
Whichever, if you must stick with this wretched ISP, then go for Windows XP or Vista. Vista is the newest (so many things might not be compatible yet) but XP is the tested one.

Here is the thing, it does not support because it might have low spex. . .Upgrade it into XP.
Processor Pentium 4 1.6Ghz for minimum or any kind of processor that supports your motherboard.
512 RAM DDR PC 400
128 Video card.
It will cost you 8 - 9,000 only.
