OK So I had this test done 2 weeks ago and got my results last week that tested positive for this GBS.....I have been tested in the past with my last 4 boys and have always tested negative. I was wondering if anyone knows how and why I would have this now? I'm so lost and the doctor didn't inform me with much information expect that when I start to feel labour to get to the hospital quick!! Thanks all for your Time Stacy

This is new to me and I had not heard of it before until now. There are several sites online that you can find that might explain more about it, but I'm sure you have already looked. It said that you can carry it without even developing an illness or infection so maybe it was dormant until your 4th child. Here is the link I was reading. http://www.dhpe.org/infect/strepb.html sorry not much help to you here! I hope you will be ok though, you doctor should of explained this more to you.

I tested positive with my daughter. My midwife told me there is nothing I did wrong and nothing I could have done to prevent getting it. She said there is no known reason as to why women get it. She just said sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. I wouldn't worry about it too much. I know when I first found out I had it and came home and did research about it I panicked. I was so afraid it was going to kill my baby. But after talking to my friend who is a nurse in a neo natal nursery she told me that GBS is very common. She said she sees a lot of charts from patients with GBS and the babies are all fine. You will need to get an IV with 2 rounds of antibiotics while you are in labor. The antibiotics will take care of everything. Your baby will have to be monitored for 8 hours after delivery but that is no big deal. When I went into labor I didn't realize I was in labor. When I got to the birth center I was already 7cm dialated so I only had time for 1 round of antibiotics. My daughter came out perfectly healthy. GBS had absolutely no effect on her. So try not to worry too much. I hope this helps.

You're very welcome! I know how scary GBS can sound but it's really not that bad as long as it's taken care of properly. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy and delivery!

i personally didn't have GSB but i had a pap smear when i first got pregnant, and it came out clean perfect... but after i delivered and i had my 6 week check up i got a call and my mid wife had told me i had HPV.. i asked her why it didn't show up with the pap smear that i had when i first got pregnant. she told me that with every pregnancy your body reacts differently, and most likely i was carrying the cells, but they didn't "come out" till i had the baby. so it probably was something in your last pregnancy that changed your body

I didn't have it with my oldest in 91 but had it with my middle child in 97 and when I went into labor with the newest last Janurary, I hadn't been tested so they just assumed GBS + and treated it as such. I dont' know why it happens in one pregnancy and not the others or another. Its important to get to the hospital so that they can start antibiotics through IV and also treat the baby as well as soon as its born just as a precaution. Once the baby is tested and the result is negative, the antibitics for the baby will be stopped.

I am sorry that your test for GBS was positive. I think something in your body changed after your last four pregnancies. Sometimes what hospital people say can be scary. I had three scans that were all. Then I had another at 36 weeks when I found out my baby has spina bifida. The last month of my pregnancy put much pressure on me. I know how you must be feeling. Good luck with your baby's birth.

I just wanted to add that pregnant women are not routinely tested for GBS in my country. It is lucky that you found out before your baby is born.

Thank you so much for your response. Your right at least I can get this dealt with before hand to help the baby. For yourself did everything turn out OK. I'm sorry you had to go through that. It would for sure be scary just like this GBS I think if I was more informed and understood it...it would help me be more at peace. Thanks again for your response Stacy
