Surgery

I had back surgery a year ago to repair a disc that had ruptured. The rupture was so bad that it had compressed my spinal cord and was causing paralysis to my feet and legs. I thought things were better, but the last few weeks, I've begun to hurt again, and having trouble with loss of feeling in my legs again. I'm a little anxious about going to the doctor, for fear of having to have another surgery. Has anyone else had back surgery? What were some of the lasting problems afterwards?

I have had over 16 surgeries but thankfully none of them were on my back. I know people with back problems seem to have problems for life even with surgery. I had a friend who refused to have surgery and the Doctor suggest physical therapy and it worked for her. She said the fist week, it was hard and she could hardly get out of bed but they told her that was normal to continue doin it. She did and now she has no back problems. Glad she did not have the surgery. Good luck to you

I had lost control of bladder functions and couldn't walk at all. It was either surgery or be paralized for life. There was really no choice in the matter. It's the first major surgery I've had. I had gall bladder removed and partial hysterectomy but that was all.

I have an appointment, but it isn't for several more weeks. It's hard to get in if it isn't an emergency, which this isn't. I have been trying to adjust with Tylenol PM's, but they (contrary to what the television commercials say) leave me feeling groggy at first in the mornings.

My mother had back surgery a couple of years ago. For a while she seemed better. The past couple of months she has been in agony. I have been taking her to pain clinic. She is on a pain patch and undergoing tests to see if she qualifies for an epidural shot to minimize pain for longer periods.

My mother in law gets those. She said they really work for her. Are your mother's pain patches the really strong ones that are morphine based? I think I would be afraid of those.
