Proper storage of bytes

Well with several softwares,games,movies etc i constantly keep myself busy backing up informations on cds n dvds... since i have been doing this for years now..my whole room has become a garbage of shining discs all over!!.. its occupies so much space n i dont know how to keep all these organised .. the more heart breaking story lies in the fact that i end up discovering some discs are not working n i am left scratching my head for the valuable loss of data.. i am quite puzzled with this.. can someone suggest me a better idea to have all this organised in a proper n affordable method..
