I just got this email from the Defenders Of Wildlife organization. In it, it's urging people to consider "adopting" an owl, a snowy owl, similar to that famous one we see in the Harry Potter movies, Hedwig....I can't do it right now, but might do it next month myself. In the email it states that...I quote..."Snowy owls like Harry Potter’s pal Hedwig are threatened by Big Oil’s destructive drilling plans for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge!" Also on the website itself, it states: "The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska is also a vital mating area for an astounding number of migratory birds. And around North America, owls and birds of all species are threatened from habitat degradation, illegal hunting, and the encroachment of modern day society."If one decides to adopt an owl, the funds will go towards saving this area, and in return, if you adopt an owl, you'll get a cute cuddly stuffed toy version of the owl..heck...I'll adopt just to get the toy!! So once again mankind is threatening a natural habitat, and could endanger the very existence of these beautiful birds. Here's the website of the Defenders Of Wildlife and how you can adopt an owl http://wildlifeadoption.defenders.org/site/PageServer?pagename=adopt06_snowyowl&autologin=true&s_src=WHY07WDADOPT&s_subsrc=07ADOPTEG3b&JServSessionIdr011=09fqlk8sm1.app23a

The only things that I donate to is animal things. I donate to the World Wildlife fun... and of course the humane society and the best friends club. I don't usually do anything with adopting a specific animal because I don't have the money for that yet. I have a couple bucks to donate a month, but unfortunately never enough to do that. Now my question is, did they actually refer to it as "the kind we see in harry potter movies" or was that your own influence? Because personally, I think it's kind of crappy to use a famous movie to try to get people to donate and adopt an animal. I mean, I'm sure it works. But I think it's kind of crappy. That's like saying "Donate to people with parkinsons disease, you'll get family ties season 1 on DVD!" because of Michael J. Fox. That is sweet though. I always want all those stuffed animals! I can't wait till I have money to adopt more animals and get some toys :\

well I know that. I know he has a snowy owl and I understand the similarities. I'm just saying if the company who wants people to adopt an owl was using Harry Potter to do it is kind of crappy. But if YOU were just using Harry Potter to promote it than that's different and perfectly acceptable.

I really like what the Defenders Of Wildlife are doing. I have already adopted a wolf pack and a panther family. The next adoption I plan on doing is adopting a tiger family or a jaguar family. Though I am really working towards adopting each of the animal groups they have listed on their site.

I just love animals in general. If I could I would adopt all at once, but I can't afford that. What I have been doing is when I adopted the wolf pack and panther family is dedicating it to a loved one that has passed. I think it's a great way to memorialize someone that was close to your heart.

Oh if I had the money this is something I'd love to do. I'd actually like to adopt a few different ones but for my niece. I think it would make a great present for her and she'd love it. She loves animals of all types and I think she'd get a big kick out of it. I'm hoping maybe towards the holidays I can if money is better. Get it for her for a gift :) Thanks for the link.

Awww - I love owls. I support a wildlife sanctuary here in England that looks after them, - and also hedgehogs, foxes etc. Not sure if the website you mention will deal with people outside of the States, but I will certainly give it a thorough look. As for the stuffed toy version - I actually collect owls, and have a huge number of furry, toy owls, and also ornaments in various different materials, and a few pottery/stone owls outside in the garden.

Wow - no, I never knew about the flying cats thing. Guess it makes sense, and would explain why I adore both!

I will certainly see what i can do. I think it's disgusting what people are doing. They keep saying somethin g had to be done but they still don't recycle ,they still use these gas guzzling cars, suv's.It's enough to give me a headache

it does have an impact. We have saved so much space at landfills from recycling and saved trees as well. The impact could be bigger but people just don't want to take a few seconds to put a can or newspaper in the recycling bin

I sometimes wonder..with all this recycling we're supposed to be doing it doesn't have any impact..does it?

Man destroys everything, and then goes around wanting to be bailed out before extinction. They do this because of greed and power. I wish that I could adopt a lot of animals, just don't have the funds to do anymore than I do now.

Hi, margieanneart! I know...I used to belong to a lot of environmental/animal groups --but not for many years now...I still wouldn't mind eventually "adopting" an owl in the future though

OOoo pretty owl. They always make me think of the movie Labyrinth far before Harry Potter though. =p Thanks for posting the link for adopting one! That's a neat organization! Once I'm back to work and have money again I'll have to look into it!

I give 120 dollars a year to the wildlife fund which are to protect the wildlife. I cannot afford to give anymore money. They keep trying to get me to give them more money. Like I can.
