Does anyone know what groundhogs eat? Do you know anything about their behaviors or history? Ever since I put up my birdfeeder in my backyard, he has been out in our backyards more often. Yesterday he was eating whatever bird food was on the ground. I did not know they ate bird food. My one neighbor said that the groundhog and one my neighbors cats became friends and ran off in the woods together and came back together.

I think they are so cute, we have some that come in the yard too. I live in the city and we still have raccoons, possums, and groundhogs. I think they eat whatever they can find, I have never know them to destructive like raccoons can be. I always enjoy seeing them running around.

I just checked out my profile. I love that cube that you made. How did you do that? I think the groundhog is cute as well and he was pretty big. Before having my bird feeder I did not see him very much but now I see him almost every day.

Here is a picture of a groundhog that visits mine and my neighbors backyards. Usually they eat peoples flowers or plants but this one seems to like the birdfood that falls from my birdfeeder. It is a cute little guy and supposedly we have another one a few houses up the road.

Hedge hogs are a different animal altogether. Hedgehogs are insect eating mammals whereas the groundhog or woodchuck are plant eating (( mean vacuum cleaners of plants) rodents. They can dig a hole in soil that would break most shovels, I know because I broke a few shovels trying to dig them out of the garden.

I am embarrassed to say this; but, I know absolutely, positively nothing about groundhogs. The only thing I know about groundhogs is that everyone makes a fuss over them come February 2 .."groundhog's day" and place all their trust in the creature's indirect prediction of an early or late spring. That's all I know..I will learn some more though, when I read your replies;)

I know they eat tomatoes and the leaves off of my cucumber plants. They have a feast in my garden every year. They also eat pears. The neighbors have a pear tree next door and you can watch them sit out there eating them off of the ground.

I didn't know they had groundhogs in delaware.I was really surprised to hear they were eating bird seed. I hope he isn't trying to take it from the bird feeder itself!

Ground hogs or woodchucks are vegetarians that will eat moat any plants. They dig tunnels underground and the tunnels can be 30 foot or more long with several z"rooms" that they use for different things. (If you have a vegetable garden around then you may as well kiss it good by because it will be eaten to the ground. This rodent is like a vacuum cleaner with legs as far as greens goes.
