retrieve deleted files

Have you ever been able to retrieve deleted files from an SD card? If so, how did you do it? Someone I know accidentally deleted her pictures from the card while viewing them in the camera and she is wondering if there is a chance she can retrieve them somehow. I know there used to be a way to retrieve deleted files from floppies and other drives...but I am unfamiliar with that aspect of SD "technology" so I would appreciate any comments!
