I don't know what kind of mouse you have. I have an optical one and it started doing the same thing. Turns out that the little antenae that picks up the signal had tipped over sideways. Once I got it upright again it started working again.
I wouldn't waste money on Geek Squad. It is cheaper and easier to buy a new mouse. If THAT doesn't work then I might call them for help.

It would be extremely difficult for anyone to diagnose a problem of that nature without actually trying the mouse to experience the responsiveness. Mice can be prone to numerous things from a piece of fluff in a ball mouse to a fluctuaction due to a demand on system resources.
Another obstacle is the variety of mice, all of which can have different problems or issues.
Considering the cost of a mouse it would be advisable to purchase another, which would always come in useful as a spare if you solve the mystery of your present one.

It depends on the mouse you have, it could be its got fluff in its ball (if you excuse the language), which you would need to clean out by removing the ball from its socket and giving it a clean with a dry fluff free cloth. Your mouse mat may need changed as well.
If you have an optical mouse then its probably your mouse mat which needs cleaned.
Buy a new one they only cost a few dollars anyway, and for a few dollars more you could get a cordless one.

If you have already cleaned the ball inside, or it is an optical mouse, one of the little wires inside may have broken or dust have gotten in from the little grove at the bottom of the optical and you can try to clean it, but most of the time you cannot. So it may be the dust in the optical plus one of the small wires in the cord is broken. First check to see if it has not been twisted up. It happens if one of you is right-handed and the other one is left-handed, changing the mouse from left to right and not having enough cord. Usually right=handers only allow enough for themselves --barely, and the left-handed has to go below and finish untwisting or sometimes they get frustrated and just pull. Solution to this, all you right-hander, leave plenty of cord so the other person can switch the mouse to the other side.
If the wires are broken, you need a new mouse. I would suggest lazer as there is no place for dust to get in from underneath.

Sounds like it needs cleaned.
Turn it over and look at the bottom. There is a disk with arrows on it. slide it in the direction the arrows point and remove the disk. Then the ball will come out and you can clean inside the mouse with a brush or the vacuum attachment, wipe off the ball, and reassemble.
They collect dust, lint, and crumbs.

Cheese, it most likely needs a dose of cheese. Not just any kind of cheese, but some mexican pepper jack. The kind speedy gonzalas uses to fire up his boilers. You might also check to see if the cat is hanging out near your mouse. A ball bearing mouse trap will upset most mouses. But I am totally confused as to why you have to keep putting your boots back on, that would drive me crazy also. I must say it does not take much to drive me crazy as I started life in that condition.

The only thing I know about a "mouse" is that they can be taken apart. Then you take out the ball & clean it. This used to work for me when I had the old computer. They are asy to take apart & put back together.

Hello my friend, if you are not using an optical or radiowave mouse, it is likely that your trackball and wheels are dirty. Just take out the ball, clean it and the wheels and you will have instant change for your mousie's speed.

Have you cleaned out your mopusetrap...:}...Take the bottom off and take the ball out and clean that off and clean inside where the ball was...check all contact points for dirt build up and remove if necessary, put ball back in and cover back on,,,,shake out the mouse pad and see if it works.

It can be a lot of things. Like everyone said before, the mouse might just be dirty. If it's not the case, you really should get another one. Mouses are relatively cheap and apparently they're not made to last long.
If even changing the mouse the problem persists, then it might be the port where you plug it. It happened to me once. I had a PS2 mouse, and the port stopped working. I got a PS2 - USB adapter and simply changed the port. It solved the problem.
