I just finished watching willie Wonka for about the 20th time in my life; only times since I was a adult. My kids love this movie and the recent version, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" with Johnny Depp as Wonka. THis discussion is about the original.
Was anyone else from my generation creeped out by this film? I am convinced that the writer and director were both tripping on acid while making this movie. There were so many scenes the gave me the "willies" pardon the pun. The Umpa Loompas were scary. The boat ride, complete with lights, colors, images and a poem, was trippy. And the Grandpa, Aunts and Uncles all confined to the same bed was...disturbing.
Am I alone? Am I just crazy? Let me know.

I can't remember it creeping me out, I do know I always loved the original and when ever I knew it was on, I dropped everything to come run to the TV. I thought it was magical and wonderful. The only part that bothered me was the boy who got stuck in the drain, that's because even as a child I was Claustrophobic. So that scene bothered me a bit. Outside of that, no it didn't creep me out. Maybe I am the weird one, wouldn't put it pass me none, LOL.

I remember being afraid when I was a kid and didn't know why. NOw that my kids love the movie, I know why it creeped me out. It's jsut creepy. The Boat is a big thing for me. and wonka reciting a poem during the trippy boat ride is so acid influenced it's freaky. I don't know if we are in the same age group, but it flips me out.

It didn't really creep me out, although I thought it was a bit sad with the relatives sharing one bed. That's how poor that family was.
Maybe I am the creepy one, because I enjoyed when the "brats" got their due. It's only a movie and I would never want a child to have to go through what they did, but as I said, I did enjoy it.
I love Johnny Depp, but he creeped me out much more than Gene Wilder in the role.
PEACE

I think the brats getting their due was the moral. Personally, I get creeped out more with wilder than depp just because wilder seems so much less of a threat. Off topic, I adore johnny depp since the 21 jump street days, but I would much rather let my kid hang with Gene Wilder as Wonka than Johnny Depp. My opinion. LOL
