How do you deal with an inconsistant boss??!?

One of my duties at work (in the lab of a clinic) is looking at urine samples under the microscope when they have an abnormal dip. (Such as blood or excess protein in their urine, or bacteria). One of the things we report to the Dr are casts. These are basically chunks of protein sloughed off from the kidneys. Hyaline casts are basic protein... chunks (for lack of a better term) that aren't a big deal. But if we see a cast that has Red Blood Cells (RBC's) or White Blood Cells (WBC's)trapped inside of it, it's a bit more serious.
Well, when I first started working there, I reported on a urine that had a few hyaline casts that had either one little ol' WBC, or even a part of a cell that was already degrading. So instead of calling WBC casts, I reported "hyaline casts with WBC inclusions". That way I was still letting the Dr know that it wasn't a major deal, but if the patient had symptoms of kidney problems, then he'd see that they were starting to show.
Well, my boss told me not to confuse the Dr's by putting stuff like that. If a cast has one WBC, or if it's full of WBC's, it's a WBC cast. Report it the way you are supposed to report it so the Dr's don't have to call to ask what the heck your talking about. So from then on, I report them as such if the casts have anything in them.
Well... a few days ago, I had a smaple that was packed full of casts. Most of them had WBC's and remants, but none of them were actually FULL of WBC's. I called them WBC casts. My boss wanted to verify, so she looked. Then she said... "I'm not sure these really are WBC casts, since not a single one of them is full of WBC's, report that there are possible WBC casts, but mainly hyaline casts with WBC inclusions"
HYALINE CASTS WITH WBC INCLUSIONS!?!?!?!
My own termonology that she scoffed at months ago! I, of course, brought up that previous conversation to which she replied, "I certainly don't remember that conversation and I doubt that I have EVER said anything like that!"
AHHHHHHH!!!!!
So I reported it how she said. And from now on she wants to see (verify) any casts that I intend to report as a WBC or RBC cast.
HOW frustrating!! Do you work with anyone like that?

I don't work with anyone like that yet..She is very good at confusing you. How did she become the boss when she can't even begin to know what it is she wants?..It can become very confusing to say the least and it doesn't help you out at all. It is either one way or the other, it can't be both, or one way just when she feels in the mood that day..She needs to be more consistent...This would drive me batty as well..Write it all down and date it then present it to her when she says she can't remember..Although you are suppose to remember everything according to her, and read her mind as well..Bummer.

Yeah, bummer is right. Any mistakes that are made in the lab are ALWAYS my fault.

I was fortunate enough in my career to nave have had this problem. I can see how frustrating this is for you and it would be for me also. Your boss is telling you that she
doesn't quite trust what you tell them. That is the frustrating part.
The first time this happened my guess is that they doctor called her. He or she may have never have seen that terminology and so was trying to get an understanding. So she had to talk with you.
It sounds like there needs to be some clearly defined method of reporting that both you and your boss can agree on. With that in hand if she doesn't back you again you will have a good reason why you stated it the way you did.
Bosses are first and foremost human. That is bad enough but often they have to play politics in order to keep their job. In this case the doctor is never wrong so you have to roll with the punches so to speak.
Remember it takes time to get your bosses trust. The only way to really do that is if she never has to deal with any thing you do. Keep working hard and do the very best you can to report something the doctor will understand. I can't imagine any doctor not knowing what you said but I am sure they are out there.

With this situation, she just shot it down before I even reported it. I was still reading urines and she offered to put the results in for me. When she saw that one, she made me change it. I have never had the Dr's ask about anything I reported. They call a lot, so if there ever was a problem like that, I'd know.
THanks for your input. I plan on giving a few more examples of the craziness I put up with soon.

In most workplaces there are people like your Boss. She is striving for advancement. And she's the kind who will step on people's heads on her way up the ladder. She is always covering her a$$, and will do anything to make herself look good in her Boss's eyes.
My suggestions are... Always do your best work. Try to please her, but keep looking for a different job opportunity. Get out of that Lab as soon as you can find job that pays as well or better.
