Okay this is a strange yet hilarious and sad tale. First I'll ask, have you ever lost or left your keys behind at the cashier at a store, or gas station? Did you feel like a fool having to describe the keys on the ring and the ring itself to prove that it was your keys they have their? I've never lost my keys or left them behind so I have been fortunate enough to avoid the embarassment of desribing the differnt things on my krey ring. I got gas smokes and lottery tickets at my local gas station Sunday morning. There was a few people in line behind me and a couple in front. Well the woman in front of me asked, "Sir did you find any keys in the last half hour?" This says to me she left her keys behind a half hour or so. She was on a bike so I am assuming they were house/apartment keys etc. Well I got the shock of my life when the cashier said, "Yeah." And set some keys on the counter. He didnt ask for prooof of these being the keys she lost or anything at all just said yeah and gave them to her. She did not just leave them as she asked "half hour". Unreal. So as a joke I asked, "Did you have any more keys." HAHAHA. The guy behind me cracked up laughing while the cashier thought I was serious and had a strange look on his face like did I give her the wrong keys. Well I just wanted to share this tale. I cant believe her just GAVE her the keys no questions asked.

I agree with you that he gave them back too easily, but he may have remembered the woman when she came in the 1/2 hour ago. I've lost my purse in a Wendy's resteraunt and they gave it back to me. Yes, I did have to describe it first, but a purse is a bit different than a set of keys. I was most impressed with the fact that everything in there was untouched!

They may have [ossibly recalled the woman but there were a
few clerks working as it was Sunday agternoon and VERY busy.
So I think they gave them quickly to speed the line along.

Tell me Bob,Do you go into a store at random and ask for a set of keys out of the blue that don't belong to you? What exactly would you do with a strangers set of keys?Where would this random set of keys fit?
I don't see the problem with the clerk handing over a set of keys
as I'm sure that he or she was the person that served the recipient in the first place and probably recognized her from the half hour before.

Did you ever think that criminals follow people for a reason. And this could have been such a situation. Someone followed them from home then seen they left their keys behind etc? It is a possibility. I just hope I get asked to describe my keys if I ever lost them is all I am saying.

I lost my keys several years ago when they only weighed two pounds and a very nice person returned them to me. My keys were easy to identify, as my business name is connected to them with my first name. They weigh about 5 pounds now with all the other items including a lanyard on them. They are hard to miss and haven't lost them recently. My husband is surprised no clamper is attached.

That clerk should have been reported for doing that. I mean, it is pretty funny to think that people actually lose their keys in places like that....I mean, they need to start their vehicles, right? But that clerk should have asked what type of keys, keyrings, etc. before handing them over. I used to be the assistant manager at a convenience store/gas mart, and you wouldn't believe how many sets of keys we would have at one time. Either the clerks would find them, or customers would turn them in. Believe me, I played 20 Questions when someone asked if we had their keys, just so I could make sure they were the actual owner.

Good heaven's I lose things all the time, I forget stuff on the bus, I have supplied good will with a lot of stuff as that is where all the unclaimed lost and found stuff goes. The last thing i lost was groceries, a 2lb bag of cherries, a pound of salted peanuts and a kg of bulk rice. The stuff that is turned in on the buss is put in the drivers executive room (washroom) at the bus exchange, and then taken down to the bus office at the end of their shift, if it is not claimed it goes to good will in 30 days, and yet when I phone they say sorry nothing was turned in, So I just chalk it up to my wonderful memory. I have learned the hard way to keep my purse slung around my neck or I would be forever trying to replace all my ID and that is a big big pain in the a$$.I am sure the cherries were enjoyed by someone.lol

I for got to tell you we have a huge fine if we lose our keys and the building is broken into. If this happen the whole building must be re keyed and you get to pay for the whole wonderful bill. It happened to one of the people in the building, and the bill came to over $1800.oo , I have a food store code tag on my key ring and if they are put into the mail they will be returned to me, but no other identification is on mine. Also for those of you that have the store code tags if you read the back most will return your keys to you, so if you see a key ring and it has a store tag look on the back it is one way of getting the keys back to their rightful owners. I know at one time the disabled veterans had a similar service.

Wow!! I liked when you replied to the Cashier... "Do You Have anymore Keys", and yes, I can understand your concern with the keys. I used to be a Cashier and unless I knew 100% the person who left something there, I always had to ask for more proof when someone left something behind, as really, you never do know do you.

i never left my key anywhere before... so i never know whether i will be questioned or not when i try to get my keys back... anyway, i think it is OK for the cashier not to ask any questions because there is no benefit for other people to have other people's keys...

It is certainly foolish that the store owner did not require a description & then identification.
My daughter lost her wallet, containing about $25.00 & her school ID card about two weeks ago whilst shopping.
We were almost certain that it had been stolen. I rang the lost & found section anyway. I had to describe her wallet first. They had it, which was fantastic.
When I arrived there I had toi show ID, to prove I was the Mother of my daughter. Then they returned the wallet to me.

I don't really see what the big deal is. Although I can't see myself going very far without my keys, especially if I drove there, if the clerk remembered the woman being there, I don't see any reason not to give her back the keys without proof. If it had been a wallet or a purse, that would have been another matter. For something like that I would have expected to have them ask for proof.

He seriously didn't ask for any description whatsoever? That is hilarious! But terrible... You are such a goofball...pulling his chain like that! Sounds like something i would do...
It's actually really sad that he didn't make her describe anythign about them. What if she had asked about a purse? Or a wallet? Would he have just given those over, too? When i worked customer service, if anyone asked us if we found keys or a purse or wallet, they had to describe the item pretty well befor ewe would hand them over.

No I have never lost a set of key, since I only have one set of keys, how would I leave the place. LOL I did leave my check book at my sister in-laws. They found it on top of their refeg a few months later. I know the check book was not stolen and this was before idenity theft.

that's interesting. he probably thought, who wants to steal a bunch of keys anyway, or who would have known that someone lost a bunch of keys? unless there's an address written on those keys (which is one of those things you are told never to do since it leads a crook right to your doorstep, but somehow I'm sure some people still do thinking that the person who found them will return them!) then it's kinda hard to know which lock them keys belonged too.
I've had to describe my wallet before. my friend had to describe her diamond before, since it fell out of its ring setting at a restaurant and by God's grace the waiter found it and was honest enough to keep it for her!

Hi there.
Well, at least she got the keys back.
I think its ok to give keys away easily, as long as they don't come with an address.

I've left my keys behind a couple of times. Once, the cashier remembered me (I believe I had blue or purple hair at the time), so I don't imagine that there needed to be a lot of questions. But I did have to describe the key chain the second time. It was pretty easy, since my keys have a car dealership key chain on them for a dealership that isn't anywhere near here (I'm in Colorado -- the dealership is in New Jersey).
