New Cell Phone and Wrong Numbers

I just got a new cell phone and I am using a pay as I go plan. Problem is that I am getting wrong numbers and text messages that are eating up my time. I think I found a way to block the text messages, but what about the phone numbers? Is there a way to block people from calling?

I had the same problem when I first signed up with virgin mobile pay as you go plan. For the first month or so I got all kinds of wrong numbers and it got me so mad. I called VM cust service to find out why and they told me that they recycle phone numbers so the number I have was likely someone else's number recently. They said that they wait six months to recycle the number and give it to someone else but I'm not sure that's true since I signed up with a few months of VM starting in the cell phone business. So every time it happened I'd call cust service to tell them and made them credit my account back. Nothing in their literature mentioned that I could get a recycled number and it made me mad that a few dollars of my pre paid minutes were spent on wrong numbers and calling voicemail only to find a message from someone I didn't know. It stopped within about 6 weeks and I still get a few wrong numbers here and there but I blame it on people dialing wrong or people giving out the wrong number. Glad that your wrong numbers are starting to slow down.

Thanks! Yeah, I don't think I've gotten a wrong number on the phone in a while. People can still misdial from time to time, though.

This would be Annoying for sure. I am Glad I have a regular Cell phone so I do not have to worry about things like this, and I do not have Text messaging so that is not a bother for me either. Maybe you need to talk with the Company that deals with this phone, and see if there is anything that they suggest?

Thanks. I can actually block the text messages, I've found out. I haven't really gotten a lot of calls in the last few days. Last night, though, I got a call late, late at night from "unknown". Well, I didn't answer it and the person didn't leave a voice mail, so I wasn't charged.

I don’t think so- But I thought if you didn’t answer them they would not count- I guess I would not answer any call that you didn’t know the number- that stinks otherwise- to be using your minutes for no one you know.

Thanks! It seems like the calls have stopped for now and I haven't been getting any. I think it's strange because they are required to wait three months before recycling a number. So, you would think after three months that someone would know that the previous person no longer has that number.

Do you have caller Id if you do then do not answer the calls that you do not recognize the number. That is the only way I know of blocking the wrong number calls.

Yeah, I do. That's usually how I screen calls, too. But, some people that are calling from landlines block their ID and they might be people calling me from work, so I need to answer them.

This happened to me a few years back when I got a new phone. I was able to avoid the extra charges by calling my voice mail from my regular phone to collect messages instead of listening to them on the cell phone. It was annoying, but the pesky calls dropped off after a while. Does your phone company charge for messages that are left, or just the ones you play back?

That sounds like a good idea. But, the voice mail number is long distance, so I would be charged anyway. I don't think I get charged if I don't play the message, but I'm not sure. I always like to listen to my messages because they may be from someone I know. However, I don't give out the cell number to that people, so I should probably delete any unknown messages.
