there are a couple of popular shows that entail people buying a house, fixing it up and then selling it (for a profit hopefully!)...its called flipping a house... do you know anyone that has flipped a house? did they make much money on it? i know a couple that did, they made some money (i am not sure how much, they are not that close to us...), but the guy is super handy with tools and builds stuff all the time. if you did, did you make much money? would you do it again?

I never have, but I went to church with a man who did that for decades. He always made a tidy profit. He never went into extreme makeovers, because he didn't renovate million dollar homes, just homes for middle America. He lives a comfortable life, and when it was time for his wife to go into a nursing home, he could afford the very best. Wonderdul man, he is. So are you watching the show on A&E about flipping houses, the one on HGTV, or the ones on Bravo called Flipping Out?

I flipped a house about 5 years ago. It was a real 'fixer-upper' and needed some tlc, but otherwise a good house in a nice neighborhood. I found under the carpeting that there were hardwood floors in beautiful condition, and I refinished them and coated them with polyurethane to a beautiful shine (and easy upkeep.) I fixed all the stuccoed walls, tuck-pointed the chimney, re-linoleumed the kitchen and bathroom floors. Lots of fixing up, but since I did the work myself it cost far less than it would to do it by hiring it out. I made $30,000 profit on the house when it sold despite the fact that the realtor wanted to put it on the market for $15,000 less than what HE thought the value was. The first 3 families that came to the open house wanted it, and all three thought they were getting a great deal. With the profits I got another fixer-up that was larger and had more land. Doing home improvement projects is not as hard as most people think. You just have to be willing to do your 'homework' and figure out what needs to be done, and the supplies needed for each project. When I started out I didn't know how to do plumbing, but I learned quick, and read a lot of 'how-to' books on it before I ever lifted my first pipe wrench. I am a 5'2" female weighing 100#...if I can do it I think anybody can, you just have to believe you can do it, and learn as you go.
