Are clothes really a reflection of our competence at a particular job? What of the brilliant guy who doesn't think about it. I used to know recruiters and their biggest job was convincing the computer guys - who made mega money - not to wear torn jeans and old t-shirts to work.
What of the person with great work ethic, willingness and ability to learn new skills who can't afford a really nice suit?
Do you have any stories of the different ways people have seen you and interacted depending on what you wear? For me - its going in the store one day in a nice work dress and being greeted, approached and helped by all store personnel, then next I went in jeans and an old army jacket and the same people ignored me - greeted those ahead of me and behind me and helped everyone but me. Stayed on the phone at the register.
What's your story?

I don't think clothes make the man or woman. There are many empty headed people that can dress well and many geniuses that only wear t-shirts and jeans. I can see that you can't wear jeans to a formal dinner or a formal wedding. And I can see that you can't wear a suit to the beach. But everywhere else it is up to you or your employer.I think that the store personnel were wrong. They should treat everyone the same because you don't know who has money and who doesn't. It reminds me of the scene in Pretty Woman. Julia Roberts was dressed in a mini skirt and a tank top but she had the money for a dress and when she went into a store not only did the saleslady not help her, she was rude. After Julia had gotten her clothes somewhere else, she went back , dressed in a white suit and told the sales lady that she missed a big commission by not waiting on her.You can go in wearing a suit to a store without any money or credit. And you can go shopping in comfortable clothes with money to burn. Assuming is very bad for business.
