I suppose pins, hats, and jewelry aren't allowed either. Heaven forbid you be an individual. I don't see how wearing a t-shirt with designs on it, hinders education or says that students are committed to learning. Other schools, apparently are following suit: http://www.standardspeaker.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5789&Itemid=2 It makes it sound like most people are happy having how they dress dictated. They say it's to get rid of bullying *laughs* I think that's the lamest excuse ever. At another school where the school decided to ban certain colors: http://www.kcbs.com/pages/860095.php?contentType=4&contentId=841750 A protest turns into a food fight -- and the kids are arrested instead of getting detention. A t-shirt company, spotting the need for students to find a loophole to these new strict rules came up with anagrammed shirts so the kids can act out and not get in that much trouble (as long as the school didn't ban shirts with markings on them, that is): http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7008280251 Dang that is so depressing. 98% of students don't care, or else conform to this school's guidelines. I have a problem with attempting to "create order" by making children cookie cutter people. Without individuality a person never truly flourishes..ergo they never reach their full potential. No matter how hard you push them..they'll lose much of that intuitive artistic flare -- even if they're an artist and their art is good, I can gaurentee you..you take away individuality and that art will never have gotten to be as good as it would've been otherwise. http://www.wjhg.com/home/headlines/9320562.html http://www.dicksonherald.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070814/NEWS04/708140369 I applaud the arts students for finding ways to look different from the rest though. It still doesn't mean I agree with the schools' new policy. That's even more depressing. 99% of the students complied. Man this dress code business in schools is all over the place..why the heck couldn't I find references yesterday? http://www.walb.com/Global/story.asp?S=6861053 http://www.nynews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070806/NEWS02/708060337 Trading a little bit of order (less kids obsessing over clothing for looks purely), for the children's individuality -- is immoral and not in the long run a fair tradeoff. The fact so many parents are for this, that so many kids won't do anything to stand out from the rest..both surprises and horrifies me. Just because most people say its necessary..that makes it okay? You don't question that..give it no serious thought? Hell. If I went to a school hat decided to do this too I'd show up in my underwear..sure, I'd get the indency thing from people..and be accused of being an exhibitionist -- but if they say "No t-shirts, no jeans" which is nearly everything in my wardrobe to begin with..fine, I'll go in nothing but my underwear. Make a statement to get people talking, -thinking-. *sighs* See..if one school does it, tht's fine. But if all the schools get to doing it..like they seem to want to -- then I have a problem. Because then..you don't have a choice at all about it. Tranfering to another school won't solve anything that way. And I thought that was one of the points about America..you get the right to choose -- having a choice means you have freedom. Call me an individualist if you want -- I probably am, but having a nation of kids all wearing identical outfits..disturbs me. I'm not against trying to bring peace and unity to schools..but don't sacrifice individuality to do it. You know? Well..opinions, guys?

I just heard on the radio this morning that 2 students were placed in detention for not following the new dress code - they were wearing the correct pants and shirt attire but they added a casual jacket and tie as well!

I know. Some schools are even going as far as to say what shows kids can wear..getting upset over shoes which have brand logos on them. It's crazy.

I think they should concentrate more on Yobbish behaviour and the bullying problem thean what the kids are wearing lol. Here in the U.K the Teachers are now afraid of the kids!! We have 257 named gangs in London alone..I mean what the hell is going on in our society? I think they should do away with the petty things and get down to basics and teaching decent humane behaviour as we turning into a jungle of hooligans.

I agree..getting all uppity because "OMG you're wearing YELLOW!" is ridiculous, they should be teaching morality and philosophy. I've heard colleges with classes like that..but never high schools which I think probably need it even more.

Things have gotten way out of hand these days. I can't believe the extreme measures schools are going to to attempt to eliminate any means of creative behaviour on the part of possibly rebellious students. The bigger deals they make out of this crap the more creative students are going to get about making sure it gets through.

It's really a wonder how far things have gone and how little people have noticed..even though things are alot more obvious these days -- how bad things are. But yeah..all we can do is try to raise a stink and hope someone can do something about it, I guess.

Choice and freedom are two endangered species in the United States right now. That's my opinion, and this is just one more indicator.

That's my opinion too, hun. A country's state of being is usually reflected by the children. It's enough to give a person a headache half the time just to think of how painfully obvious it is that freedom of anything is absent from daily life these days..yet people tucker on, as if nothing's changed. We do what we can though. Thanks for commenting.
