Did you think slavery no longer existed? Here is an article about modern slavery. Where it exists and what is going on. http://www.infoplease.com/spot/slavery1.html Is there anything the UN or any individual country of the world could or should do about this modern slavery?

This would be a UN issue....although maybe the NAACP and the Rev. Jackson and Rev. Sharpton might could weigh in and actually do something useful for once. The Emancipation Proclamation only applied to the US, and has no meaning beyond our borders, much the same as our Constitution is limited to withing our borders. Although I don't agree with Slavery, I also don't see it as a problem that we as Americans should concern ourselves with. We are still dealing with issues left over from our own slave period, and don't need to be taking own the issues from any other countries that do practice slavery.

You remind me of my mother. She would always say people should fix their own problems first and then worry about those of other people. Guess we do have a problem or two that need fixing before we do any worrying about others'.

I am referring to this article and the original post. Any slavery in the US is nothing more than just another criminal activity, and is usually perpetrated by foreigners against other foreigners. Then there is the white slavery rings that are also illegal. So what? A crime is a crime regardless...and you are missing the point. The slavery described in that article would fall under the jurisdiction of the UN and the governments of the country involved...just as the things that happen in our country are the problems that we as a nation and our government have to contend with. The US does not have a widespread slavery problem such as is described in the article, and I seriously doubt that you will find many in the US that support the idea of slavery, nor will you find many slavers here either. Disagree all you want, it does not change the actual facts one bit.

"Physical mutilation is practiced upon these slaves not only to prevent escape, but to enforce the owners' ideologies. According to an ASI report: "Kon, a thirteen-year-old Dinka boy, was abducted by Arab nomads and taken to a merchant's house. There he found several Dinka men hobbling, their Achilles tendons cut because they refused to become Muslims. Threatened with the same treatment the boy converted." Why does that not surprise me? I think the UN needs to do something NOW.It is up to each individual country to cooperate though and outlaw slavery and make it a crime that carries a very harsh punishment. But I don't expect any of the muslim countries to cooperate, that would be the day.

You are right, no Muslim country would co-operate in eliminating slavery. The prophet owned slaves. Therefore, since he was the most perfect human being who ever lived (Muslims believe this) owning slaves is OK. No one will ever convince Muslims slavery is not acceptable.

My dear Mr. Redyellowblackdog, you have merely touched the tip of the iceberg! Did you know that most of our "civilized" governments have openly been practicing reinforced-slavery for quite some years now? No, I am not talking about some child's play? I am talking about neo-slavery in its most extreme form! Did you know that the US government has, for some years now, been using implants on people to render them without their own will? They are currently even talking about making ID implants mandatory. Yes, modern slavery is a problem and is going on in the US just as it is in other countries. Isn't it interesting that those who cry the most about the slavery of the distant past refuse to do a thing about the slavery of the present. Apparently they have nothing against slavery, but they do have something against missing out on some camera time.

Yes, you bring up an interesting point. Our friend Jesse Jackson immediately comes to mind as I saw in the news just recently where he is still advocating the payment of reparations for slavery to decendents of slaves. Does Jesse Jackson have anything to say about opposing ongoing slavery here in the USA or elsewhere? Not that I've heard. You don't suppose this is because some of the modern slave traders in other parts of the world are black? To anyone out there: If I'm wrong, please, post a link to the appropiate Jackson quote. I'd be glad to start a thread concerning this and praise Jackson for his courage while I'm at it. I am aware of at least one couragous thing Jackson has said, perhaps he has done it again and I did not hear about it
