More money for seniors.

While many seniors retire with a pension from their place of employment, there are also many who don't. Those people are totally dependent on the pension paid by the government. This can be a real problem, especially for those who have to pay rent. When people reach a time when they can no longer work, is it fair for them to be put in a situation where, as some say, they have to choose between being cold or being hungry? In other words they can't afford to heat there homes and buy groceries. With an aging population, this is becoming a serious problem. Will younger people be willing to pay more taxes, so that seniors who need it, can have more money? Should they be expected to? Lets have a discussion.

My mom would be in that position right now, if I didnt help her out. I'd never let that happpen to her.It is so disrespectful of this culture to simply abandon people of age and let them suffer. The senoiors that live here (MA) are paying higher taxes now, on rrecord, than they ever have before, some having to leave homes they've been in for 50_ years. It's shameful, seniors need help and all the tax cuts available.Everyone should pay until it all evens out, or as close as it can get, I hate to think of anyone cold OR hungry.

Hi pendragon, Thanks for your excellent response. I hate to think of anyone cold or hungry too, but it is happening, and yes, it is shameful.

There is also a third category to consider: the self-funded retiree, who does not get the discounts offered to pensioners. Since the government isn't paying out a pension to these people (because of their years of saving) they should at least grant the same discounts as they do to pensioners. Self-funded retirees are saving the government a tremendous amount of money. With regards pensions. If the government stopped spending money on absolutely ridiculous projects and "research" there would be no shortage of funds to adequately care for our aged. Have you seen a list of government research projects? Incredible!

i also feel our senior citizens sud have more money. because they can't earn as before and even they don't after they retire. Most of the cases due to these they are depended on theuir children.

Well there are many things I object to paying taxes for - defence, money for the War etc, but the older generation is not one of them. Those people (in the main), have worked hard all their lives and paid their taxes, and many have fought in wars to keep us safe. I would be more than happy to pay more taxes to give them safety and security in their final years.

I would not go for the thinking to put them in the situation where they would be cold and hungry!. I think its ofcourse necessary to pay more txses if the situation really goes to that place. Personally I would never let my parents go to that situation when I can afford it personally and in the same way if I consider it is necessary in broeder sense, yes it is ok to go for that too.

If all the youngsters take care of their respective elders( older), then this problem would not arise. Instead of carrying the burden of paying heavy taxes every month, they can look after their respective old ones who looked after them during their age of helplessness. It will be a sort of showing their gratitude as well. Also, the old ones would stay at home taking care of household activities and safeguarding the house. That's what we do here in India. Parents take care of their children till they complete their education and get employed, thereafter, its children's duty. If it does'nt work for the old people, old age homes are always there for them to join. Oldage homes raise funds from various sources and run, they are economical, don't know about your country though.

Excellent topic! I'm in what some call the "sandwich generation" and boy is that a good name. My mom is 90 and living on a very limited income, but she does have the good fortune of not having to take alot of medication that she has to pay for herself. My only daughter is grown with a family of her own but she has a bad chronic illness (Chrohn's disease) so she's on disability and she has alot of medical expenses. She's in a really bad way because if her husband makes much money at all she'll lose her medical coverage and if he has a job with health coverage neither one of them would be covered because of pre-existing conditions...my son-in-law has several ruptured discs in his back. They have decent coverage for kids in Pa., but adults can be totally screwed if they have health problems. I don't think anyone, old or young, should ever have to choose between eating and heating their homes or taking their medicine! Go ahead and raise my taxes, I for one would be better off in the long run as alot of others would be. Sorry if I got off-topic a little, by adding healthcare. Annie

Hi anniepa, Thanks for adding to this discussion. There is much to be done for people of all ages, who are not able to support themselves. By the way, I had intended to add health care, Thanks.

I am on accidental disability retirement from a city in "Taxachussetts". Where I was a municipal worker and am on accidental disability retirement I am not allowed to work or at least if I was able to find a job that I was able to do they (the retirement system) would take a dollar away from me for every dollar that I earned over a set small amount. Plus I would have to pay taxes on it (I do not have to pay taxes on my retirement now). In other words they do not want me to be able to better myself financially, and this pension if just not enough to really cover the things that I would like to be able to do. My car is down and I am unable to fix it or get another one so I use public transportation to get around, luckily there is bus service close by. I am hoping to move to Texas in the future because the cost of living is a lot cheaper there plus I will not have to worry about the cold or snow as much as I do up here.

Hi Pose123! I will be willing to pay more taxes if it is really be going to uplift the living conditions of our senior citizens. However, in my country I am very doubtful about this because until this time there are still so many corrupt government officials who are only in the government service to fatten themselves and their pockets. I, however, admire our president who is doing everything she can to erradicate corruption in our country. Take care and have a nice day!
