Kids today

As most of you know, I'm a substitute teacher. Well, this year I have my own class for the first half of the year. Carpentry. Not really a bad thing, because my dad and my husband are carpenters. So, I know a lot about it. But I can't take the kids in the shop to make anything. And that bugs them. They have to do class work. Well, they just took their second test and almost all of the flunked it. I don't get it because it was an easy test. And if these parents knew how most of these kids were acting in class. Man, I tell you what. I'm going to try to get some hands on project for them to do on Fridays, but they will have to be good to do them, because I'm paying for everything and I don't reward kids when they are bad. Wish me luck!

I can understand their frustration, as well as yours, but they should not act out towards you. If they have complaints, they should take it up with the school board. The class is supposed to be a hands on class, I'm sure. Maybe the Principal could come in and talk with them. I am sorry that you are having such a time with them. I am guessing that they think if they all do so bad, they will get someone else in there and will be able to go into the shop. Hang in there.

The principal says to just have them do book work. The counselor is trying to help, but I'm not doing a good job at it. She finds things for them to do that first and second graders can do easily or videos for them that are boring. But her heart is in the right place. The kids seem to like the idea of the on hands projects in the classroom, so we'll see how that goes.

Good Luck Hun. Maybe can you have them do some popsicle stick projects? I dunno what grade level your teaching but least it has a somewhat of a carpentry theme. But I guess if they are too old they wont be modivated to be good over the week for a popsicle project on fridays LOL! The best of luck!

Thanks! They are middle school and high school kids. I told them about doing some projects in class and they all seemed to really enjoy the idea. We'll see what happens. Thanks!
