Insurance for school excursions

My sister has an 8 year old boy at school. One of the sponsors of the school is a small insurance company. Few weeks ago the school send the school news paper home with the kids and there was a ad for the insurance company for insurance for the kids. That is ok and fine but last week my sister got a letter from school saying that the kids are no longer covered by insurance (the one that the school takes out and its includet in the fees). And if kids go on excursion they are no longer covered by the school and the school takes no responibility for any cost involved. The insurance company can insure the kids for excursions (mind you that is 2 separet aplications 1 for school 1 for excursions) and that one is about $25 a month or about $275 a year (as the only month they dont have to pay for is january. The kids go on excursions every week or so (they also count the foodbal oval across the street where kids play 1 time a week an excursion). Is it just me or the whole thing is a bit fishy ?

Is this a private school? Sounds like it. I've never heard of a school having a sponsor before. If you ask me the whole insurance industry is a big rip off anyway. I don't think I'd be taking out separate insurance for that. Either keep the poor kid at home or if something happens just suck it up and realize you can't sue.

No this is a public school in australia and it is a first I have heard about the insurance thing. They need sponsors as the gov is not spending enough on public education so when the school needs new things they raise money to buy it (say new bench or new undercover play area)

Yeah well you know people just have to make things so much more complicated these days. I heard on the radio last week some school here (US) forgot which city banned the kids from playing tag. God forbid some kid would fall and break their neck playing tag (eyes rolling) It's a wonder anyone born after 1980 survived to make it to adulthood. Good grief.
