I must have blocked out the ending to this book as a child due to being tramatized!
Yesturday I was reading the story to my 6 year old son when he brought it from school. I always make voices to all the characters in books so off I went in a really squeaky voice "the sky is falling..." and so on. Giving each of the characters different voices sounding like there animal sounds like a chicken, duck, etc... then I get to Foxy Loxy and give him a very sly scary wolf voice "Come with me, I'll take youto the king." and on I went not realizing poor Chicken Little's fate. So when I finally got to the last page with a big fat wolf licking his chops and read in shock that Chicken little never told the king the sky was falling, I looked over at my son with my mouth dropped and eyed wide open just to see the same face looking right at me. Then after a pause he shouts "That is a stupid book!"
This was school material, do you think this should be censored? Or if not, what lessons do you think this teaches childern?

It tells your kids to speak up.
There are a lot of childrens' books that really, when you look back at them, probably weren't as good as you originally thought they were. Like the cat in the hat. What does that teach you? not to let a strange cat in your house? or to clean up your mess before you mom comes home? what about the old woman who swallowed a fly? Don't eat weird things?
In other news. the movie..Chicken Little, super great. and Foxy Loxy is a Girl fox.

Yeah we actually saw that movie and my son enjoyed it. Maybe that is why I forgot the ending as I saw the newer movie which turned out alright in the end. LOL

Actually.....it goes much deeper than just aht book. All of the stories that we grew up with had serious flaws and issues if you look at them closely now. I remember have nightmares for weeks over an episode of Bugs Bunny where Foghorn Leghorn digs a hole and finds his own dad body. What the he11 is that supposed to be? Trailer Park Boys would have scarred me less then that did. Get yourself out a copy of Grimms Fairy Tales sometime if you really want to be deeply disturbed. Just think back. Think about some of the stories you were read as a child......a witch in a house of candy that eats children, little red riding hood where a wolf eats the little girls grandmother (I can't rememeber if he eats her too or if she runs away), and the original story of the little mermaid doesn't end very well either. It's scary. Actually you should really do that, go to the library and get a copy of Grimm's Fairy Tales (I think it's Grimms, it's a big thick book filled with these short stories "intended" for children. It's scary.

I do remember those ones as well. I actually don't censor me childern all too much here and let them read most books and stuff. I am always reading and lean toward fanasty horror style books. They are used to "today's stories" which many parents don't let their childern view because it is too violent. HA I think what we were exposed to was way more violent. Poor Chicken. Funny you mention the Trailer Park Boy as I am in Nova Scotia. HEHEHE

...those stories were geared toward telling children not to go with strangers.. I'm not sure as I much approve of them, but it sure does seem the warning about strangers (and even non strangers) is very much needed today!
