What is DEEPAVALI?

My friend told me that Deepavali is celebrated bu Hindu Indians every years.It is also known as the "Festival of Lights",because oil lamps are lit in every Indian home on Deepavali night.
But I want to know the history of the origin of Deepavali?Anyone know?
