Why some web pages links are like this.

I see some html links, as i come across while doing ptc and ptrs, like the following examples
f.r.e.e r.e.p.o.r.t.
C.h.e.a.t l.i.n.k
f.ree r.eport
(That is Why do the place dots inbetween the letters)
By making an html page/links like this, is there really a chance that the link gets higher rank in the search engines or something different.. Can anyone tell, what is the exact logic in making such kinda links.

I have no idea and would like to hear the answer myself. I notice that when I get emails like this, it's usually trying to get around a system, avoid being eliminiated by spam filters. For example, if the spam system deletes everything that says "free," then when you put in f.r.e.e, the spam filter does not exclude this. Just a theory....
