Generation Gap...

Is today's music just plain crap or is it just the "generation gap" finally catching up with me? When I was growing up my parents always told me about how good "their" music was, the big band sound, singers like Frank Sinatra and Perry Como, stuff like that but they actually had to admit they liked some of the music I listened to. When my daughter, now 37, was growing up she and I actually like most of the same songs, so there was no real conflict there. But NOW the old "generation gap" has finally gotten to me! Or could it be (I say YES) that much of today's music is just simply crap? It seems like all the songs sound alike, there is no need for an artist to have any singing talent because it's mostly all rap, and there is no such things as nice, meaningful lyrics anymore. OK, there ARE exceptions, but for the most part this is how it is. Or is it really just that i'm getting old, like my grandkids tell me...lol...? But, since this is a discussion I fully expect to hear from some of you with a different opinion, so come on, let's talk! Annie

Music is changing. Well, the most popularmusic is;) You can still buy cds of people with sinatra Feeling buy in order to do it you have to go to a big store and do a lot o searching. Whats in right now is mostly hip-hop, pop, rnb (I'm not counting rock music beacuse it's always good xD). When i bought my first Destiny's Child CD my mother said it was squared music and didn't like it. But now she's a great fan of them and this kind of music. What is with the industry right now is that mot of people don't make music now, they're making beats instead. That's not the same but I like it too. As for lyrics... There are, in rap too. Rap just tends to be pretty vulgar and have lyrics about girls and money so that may turn people off:/

I have to agree with you about Rap music being garbage most of the time but,I think you should just go about changing what ever station that you currently listen to.There are progressive radio stations that play good music. My Son who is only twelve takes my music to burn his own cd's to listen to;It's just a matter of finding the right stations and stay away from the Top Forty type of radio broadcast

It could be a little of both. You can be getting old if you can't get why the kids like hip hop and rap. and it is true, there aren't as many good songs out today.I love music and always have. I am a few years older than your daughter. My mom like blues and country. My dad like jazz. They both liked the big bands. And I liked them all. There wasn't a generation gap on my side but when I got into rock and roll that's when my mom couldn't get into my music. And I was in my teens so I playing too loudly didn't help.My mom liked songs where you could understand every word that was sung. I would like a song and not even hear the lyrics. But before she passed away i was getting her to listen to a little rock and roll and she liked it.When Rap came out I wasn't into it, but in the pass few years I have gotten to like it. But still there aren't as many good songs out there.I remember when I was in my teens there were so many great songs and there were different styles out all at the same time. But now it is either r&b based pop, hip hop or country. That is it.

It's not you, most of the popular stuff is just awful right now. I'm 34. I have pretty eclectic tastes; there are songs or artist in almost every genre and every decade that I like; but I'd be hard pressed to name 3 songs that came out in the past year that were decent much less good. I didn't care for grunge when that was popular & I can't say I am a big fan of emo; but I can appreciate when a grunge or emo band has talent. Maybe it's that they play well, or sometimes it's well written lyrics; I don't care to be depressed but I can respect that they have a talent & skill. I loved old school rap, Sugar Hill Gang were talented, Run DMC had talent, Public Enemy had talent. But taking a little kid song, like "Do your ears hang low" and creating "does your chain hang low" is not talent. It's assanine, lame & pompous to sing/brag about your necklace for 4 minutes. LL Cool J, Salt n Pepa, Prince etc, had some grown-up & naughty lyrics, but they were sexy sounding grown-up lyrics- rap songs inviting one to suck their **** is neither sexy nor naughty, it's just vulgar. I don't think it's the generation gap catching up with you, and I hope it's a temporary thing. Someday there will once again be artist & bands on their air with talent & skill- or at least that's what I keep telling myself.

I agree with you... I hate rap song/music. How do we sing karaoke with that bad song and lyrics? I don't believe it was a modern song. It totally crap and stupid song. Do you feel entertainted when screaming singing like screaming like an crazy idiot? Singing like you can't breath? What a stupid song... old song are better... it makes me feel cool and relax....

I was raised listening to oldies and country, so of course I listen to that still, but I listen to all the music today, and even my parents like some of the music today. I can admit that even me at 21 I don't even like some of the stuff that's put out because it feels like they just throw crap together.

Yes, there is. My mother's generation, and my generation, seem to be more open-minded than my grandmother's generation. I will admit that their are some things about my generation that I do not agree with (rap is one of them, I just don't really consider it music), but a lot of things I am okay with.

I think it is a mixture of both. I like some of what comes out now, but not all of it. It is the same thing with the older stuff as well. I love the Beatles and Elvis, but I also like Madonna, Sting, The Eagles, Alana Davis, Mariah Carey and some others for examples. I think it varies from person to person too.

I hear a song every now and then that I like but it's rare. I hate when I find a song that has a good beat and then I find out it's full of swearing. I mostly listen to oldies now. !!HAPPY HALLOWEEN!! **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

Sure, anniepa, there is a lotype in the name of an artist that you like and you will gett of crap out there, but there's also some good songs out there too. I have favorites dating back to the Big Band Era, but I can still relate to some of the music that is popular today. I pick and choose! One of the saving graces in regards to music is the fact that many of the older singers are still active. I generally seek out music by old favorites and occasionally stumble across some new performers that are quite good. With so many TV shows having theme songs sung by a certain artist or group, I have become familiar with a variety of singers. I did a discussion about a week ago about Pandora, a free internet music listening site. I like it because you can type in the name of an artist or group you like and they will play songs within that general category. If there is something you do not like they will eliminate it from your list.

We must be about the same age as my parents listened to Perry Como...etc but also old country like Hank Williams. We grew up listening to yes...very meaningful songs. I hardly can listen to what is playing now. But to the kids I think they probably think it's an expression of themselves and their time. I remember being in high school and my mom playing Guy Lombardo....and me thinking what a bunch of crap that was.....last year I purchased a christmas cd....by guess who? I think each generation has their own type of independence in the music field. It's not all crap.

well i agree with you that not all of the newest singer today are good..i mean it doesn't necessarily have to have the voice and talent to sing..as long as they can sing that it just fine and they get album..i don't seem to like most of the new songs today..some are good but most are not..some don't mean anything and some i just cannot understand what message they bring..i would likely prefer the old ones..more meaningful..some can even make me cry..i love music but i know which one is the best..the singer might not sound good..but i will love it if it brings some meaning..

Hi annie, You are certainly not old, although your grandchildren may think so. I remember when I thought anyone over thirty was old LOL. Every generation have their own music, and as long as they enjoy it, it's fine with me. I don't listen to much of today's music, but when I do, there are usually young people around. Seeing them enjoy it convinces me that it has to be okay. Blessings.

Hi Annie, No I agree with you, I think a lot of the newer music coming out is just meaningless and over all crappy, within some genres of course. Not all of them. Its mostly rap, and I listen to all kinds of different music, that is lacking in meaningful lyrics. For instance, that Bay Bay Bay song lol UGH!!! Its the dumbest thing I have ever heard. I wish I could come up with some catchy chorus line and make a mil! I think a lot of it has to do with whos promoting this music too, a lot of people think its hip if it comes from MTV or BET, and just because they play the heck out of it, its what they should be listening to it. NOT necessarily. lol My husband and I appreciate the oldies, RnB and the soft rock of the 60's and 70's and country music the most. I listen to just about anything that has some meaning behind it. I like newer rock groups and some rap groups too. My older siblings influenced my musical interests as I was growing up. I grew up on Al Greene, Carly Simon, Hall and Oats, Rick James, Bet Midler, CCR, Bad Company, Bon Jovi....lol you get the idea. I think memories has a lot to do with it, when you hear those old songs, you can reminisce about old times things like that. For me anyway. Thats what I like about music, I can probably associate a song with just about any time frame in my life. Bay Lay Gray xx
