Sucked up then retrieved !

My dad is very lazy in his old age. he hates wearing regualr pants as he has a hard time with snaps, buttons, and or zippers. So we buy him those dreaded drawstring pants. Well the newest pair we had bought him my wife and I forgot to tie a large know on each end of the drawstring. I did the wash yesterday not noticing anything unusual. Then as I took them from the dryer I was folding his pants and noticed something. Grrrrrr! The one end of the string had been magically sucked into the waist loop half way through the pants. Now he has a 50 inch waist so there was a lot of string sucked up. Ugghh! It took me about 90 minutes of tugging, sliding and twisting the string and pnats till I finally retrieved the string. Now it has a know at each end and this won't happen again. Do you own or use drawstring pants? Have you ever lost the string in the wasit loop? Do you try to rethread it out so they can be sued as they should be? Or do you just leave the string alone and wear them this way? Or do you use them for a rag after this happens? HAHAHAHA!

Yes I've had this happen and the best way I have found is to just pull the rope out and use a big safety pin one that will eazily fit in the band. Hook the safety pin to the rope and feed it through the hem. You just guide the pin along till it comes out the other end then put a knot in there. The pants probably wouldn't stay up without the tie. Good luck !

That is a good idea Grandmaof2! I will have to remember that the next time that happens to a pair of pants I have with a drawstring. I only have 1 pair I think as I usually wear jeans!

The only time this does not fit is if someone in the manufacturing sector has decided that it will really be a good idea to stitch the middle of the string to the middle of the back of the pants. Then you cannot draw it out and restring it. Grrr!!!

There was already a small know on the string. I found it and just slowly and patiently threaded it back through the whole waistband. HAHAHA! Or tear them up for rags.

Mmmm..don't think I'm going to tear up my skirts for rags...cost me about $40 each..those would be VERY expensive rags...LOL

I have had occasion to go fishing for drawstrings in pants and in hoods. Pants that go up and down easily are a good choice for people who are sometimes in a hurry to get to the bathroom. It is frustrating. I have also sewn buttons on the ends of the strings if I cannot tie a big enough knot to keep the drawstring available.

Yes, that has happened to me before. I have some sleep pants that have that string on them and that has happened with them. I always hand them over to my husband and he sits there and messes with it until he gets it back out. I always tie a knot at both ends after he gets the string back out. But sometimes the knot works itself loose and it will happen again. And I never even think about checking them when I go to put them in the wash.

The know\ts also tighten up in the wash after a few times
making it neccesary to retie yet another knot on top of
the first knot. Then a 3rd knot, then a 4th, etc etc. HAHAHAHA!!

Ohhh the dreaded hoodie strings as well. I own a few hoodies and just end up pulling the strin out totally. I hate my neck being tied like this anyhow. I don't know why I buy the damn things in the frist place.

I have a couple of comfy pants that have drawstrings. I have tried everything to keep them from coming out. I do retrieve the string and try to knot them up before washing. It does seem to help.

I pull the whole thing out, put a safety pin in the end and re-thread it into the waisteband. The pin gives you something to hang on to while you thread.. You could also replace the sting with some elastic,. Put the elastic arounfd the waist and cut it 2 - 3 inches short. Put a safety pin in one end of the elastic and thread it through. Sew both the ends together when they come out. Make sure the stitching is secure. If the person loses weight, you can easily adjust the elastic.
I love pull on pants, they are soooo comfortable.

I don't wear drawstrings much anymore LOL but I lost them constantly. Some were fine without the strings but other ones I had to re string. Just another tip for if it happens again...pull the whole thing out, knot one end and put a big safety pin on the other end, then you can use the safety pin to guide the string back through. It's much easier and faster.

Hi Grandpa Bob,
So sorry to hear about your laundering problems involving a pair of draw string pants. That can be really frustrating. I have had it happen a few times. I practically live in jeans, but while I was pregnant with my daughter I had to wear pants with a drawstring so my pants would "grow with baby". I always remembered to keep them tied up when it came to washing time though so I fortunately never had that problem!

I have some PJ's with drawstrings. But I don't need the strings. HAHAHA. Not yet anyhow that is. See, I never thought of tying the strings together prior to washing. But then again noone here except
me turns clothes right side out prior to washing either. HAHAHA!

Obviously I don't use those kind of undies, but I do have PJ's with the drawstring. They are a bit of a pain in the neck.
The only way I have ever been able to find a missing drawstring, is to use a safety pin. This is assuming that one end is showing.
If both ends of the drawstring are missing, give up & throw them in the rag pile.
I find the drawstrings on my pjs are always loosening, causing them to fall down.......

I love my drawstring sweats as well as hoodies. My problem is the string in the hoodies, not my sweatpants. I have one now sitting on my dresser waiting for me to get the patience to restring it. pstttttt...I ate the chocolate bar now. lol
