How we can stop the backbiters?

It is a fashion or a common habit of the people that they use to backbite about a person in his or her absence. Why the people behave like this? What is remedy of this problem?

I live in a close knit community, being an Army wife in a foreign country, and all we get here in the Army Wife circles is constant back biting. If it's not one wife, it's another, and if they have't got something to b***h about, they'll make it up. To be honest, I find it quite pathetic, and I tend to stay out of it.
There is no remedy unfortunately, you just need to ignore it.
