Sound problem in computer

Hey friends I hav a problem with my computer system. Windows Media Player cannot play the the fine because there is a problem with my sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on my computer. It might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.
Is what it says,
Any suggegstion please.......

you mentioned Windows Media Player. when you try to play a file, do you get an error message saying it has something to do with the sound device? if not, it may be caused by an unsupported format.
.
sometimes, media players cannot play particular files simply because they do not support such files. ogg, m4a, aac, amr, etc. if you don't mind, can you tell us what sound format you're playing?
