The Kyoto Protocol is a protocol to the international Framework Convention on Climate Change with the objective of reducing Greenhouse gases that cause climate change. It was agreed on 11 December 1997 at the 3rd Conference of the Parties when they met in Kyoto, and entered into force on 16 February 2005. The objective of the Kyoto Protocol is to achieve "stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system". Notable exceptions include the United States and Australia. 137 countries have ratified the protocol, but have no obligation beyond monitoring and reporting emissions. what are your interesting opinions on this?

I find it pretty embarrassing that the U.S. is not complying with the Kyoto Protocol, especially since we account for the greatest percentage of CO2 emissions in the world. And since the U.S. is finally beginning to experience some direct results of global warming (Hurricane Katrina for one) I don't see how the U.S. government can continue to ignore the problem.

It is sad to know that God's nation is ignoring this statement of the world. The US must comply with the rest to make our earth a better place to live in for our tomorrow's children.

Hi & Hello xboxboy. Normally you always upload your valued photo for every discussion, I don't know why for this time there was no photo. But it is OK, still you maintain with your good discussion. Thank you very much. The Kyoto Protocol is the first international agreement to fight global warming. It was signed by 141 nations, including all European and all other developed industrial nations except the US and Australia. The pact went into effect on February 16, 2005, and expires in 2012. The Kyoto Protocol has been celebrated by its backers as a lifeline to save our planet from disastrous human-caused effects of a warming global climate. On Dec. 11, 1997, the Kyoto Protocol consists of Twenty Eight Articles (Article 1 to Article 28) plus Two Annexes (Annex A and Annex B), and on Article 27 at Clause 3 wrote; "Any Party that withdraws from the Convention shall be considered as also having withdrawn from this Protocol." (Source Link: http://unfccc.int/resource/docs/convkp/kpeng.html) George Bush Refuses to Sign Kyoto Protocol to Stem Global Warming 2005. "The Kyoto Protocol" became effective on Feb 16, 2005 when it was signed by 141. Al Gore was a main participant in putting the Kyoto Protocol together in 1997. George Bush made campaign promises in 2000 to regulate carbon dioxide as a pollutant. However, in 2001, George Bush pulled the US out of the Kyoto accords as one of the first acts of his presidency. Bush dismissed Kyoto Protocol as too costly, describing it as "an unrealistic and ever-tightening straitjacket." Lately, the White House has even questioned the validity of the science behind global warming, and claims that millions of jobs will be lost if the US joins in this world pact. My interesting opinions on this, "The Kyoto Protocol" became legally effective after obtaining support from countries representing 55% of worldwide greenhouse gas pollution. The agreement expires in 2012. It's likely that a new agreement will be proposed in 2012. However, if the US doesn't sign on, and instead chooses to pander to profits and business lobbyists, then the agreement will likely fall apart. China and other large nations would probably follow suit. Happy Postings and Earnings, xboxboy. HAPPY DAPPY.

Hi,there! I don't think we should ignore climate change.Actually I'm afraid it's not wise to ignore it as such issues can change our life very widely. As what you talked about the Kyoto Protocol,I do think every country should take some actions to reduce the gas and protect our world's environment. If we still don't pay much attention to it;if all the governments still try to avoid their responsibilities,we'll confront with a very embarrasing situation. We'll regret one day. Thanks for the discussion and have a good day!

I see you took my dare, and I feel as though I must respond. Unfortunately, I haven't an opinion on this at all. I do think it's interesting how America is all "Going Green" now. I took some quiz about how green I was and I was like average, I could do better. It kinda made me sad cause I thought your best was good enough, guess it ain't.

That serious doesn't suit you! lol. No, Australia keeps dancing around it all, but now that we have a change of government, that maybe rectified. You see, our (former as of yesterday)Prime Minister was a butt kisser of George Bush, so he was following his lead. i believe New Zealand has signed though!

Kyoto is not perfect but it is a good start. I really believe that all countries should start by abiding by this. Canada's new governement has also backed down on their commitment.

In the interest of humanity I would say we should respond to climate change and see to that we reduce pollution as much as possible immediately .
