Gem Hunting

I'm currently watching a show called "Best Places to Find Cash and Treasures" on the Travel Channel. The two episodes which aired tonight had the hostess go to mines that are open to the public and prospecting for gems. Of course, she is successful. Is this a legitimate way to make extra money? Does anybody live near a public commercial mine? Has anybody gone to one of these places and had success?

My mom watched that and now she wants to try it, I'm not so fond of the idea. With all the mines that have caved lately, do we really want to dig at the earth some more? My uncle and his wife used to do it and she has gorgeous jewelry to show for it so I guess it does work to some degree.

I was just thinking the same thing! it's been one of my childhood dreams to go treasure hunting. through some of my research, i found that many of the places they visit on the show charge a fee to enter and look for gems/fossils/gold/etc. I'm yet to visit any of them in person, though.
