And a whinger to boot. Dolly Parton is visiting Rotherham in South Yorkshire to launch her children's literacy program, Imagination Library, on Wednesday. A local polly is furious because her visit will delay a meeting for one hour. It's not like she is doing something frivolous, children's literacy is very important. Read the whole story and this blokes rude, sexist, comments at the end. How dare he be so rude and ignorant? This is from the Sydney Morning Herald Life & Stle web pages; http://www.smh.com.au/news/people/british-councllors-boycott-dolly-parton/2007/12/04/1196530658705.html?sssdmh=dm16.292410

Obviously this man was deprived of books as a child! Either that or he's a failed author himself. Children's literature is a big deal! I hope to be able to right some books for children and teens in the future! A good book is always a comfort and reading is something I hope my children enjoy!

I heard a part of a report today about children in Australia not doing so well at school. The reason...? They are not reading enough. I'm sure with the huge power of tv, pc games and the like kids are heading for an electronic future rather than one of readin' and writin' and playing and socialising. I hope the powers that be can reverse this trend before it's too late.

Literacy rates are dropping here. There has been an increase in the number of children starting high school who don't have the basic skills needed. It is sad, but my kids are going to be reading and writing machines. I am, so they already have a good example for it. I will also be studying myself again in the next few years, and I hope that this will encourage them more too. Make a competition out of who completes their assignments first but with high quality. My 4 year old can already read some letters and numbers and is starting to recognise some words too.

I dont get it what does it hurt that the meetein gis put off an hour for something like this that is important to the childeren. If they dont have enough meetings they need to plan more for the future. But Dolly does alot of good work no matter what her bra size is! jerl!

Exactly. He's just blaming Dolly's visit for their own inadequacy at holding meetings. His comments about her bra size showed him to be a jerk indeed.

Children's literacy is an important issue but that is not the objection. The objection is about the timing and there was not need for it to be arranged to hold up their meeting. It is extremely rude for one person to delay many, punctuality, as they say, is the politeness of kings. Sexist comments? You need to extract your head from your orifice, it was just a humorous quip. all the best urban

It's you that's whinging, about the quips, they're nothing to get your knickers in a twist about. How can you find them rude and not find keeping people waiting for an hour more rude? An odd sense of values. all the best urban

I feel justified in my opinion urban and from the looks of the discussion the majority agrees with me. Read the whole discussion, there are some really good points made. Perhaps you argue/debate with someone just for the heck of it. You are very good with words, it's a shame you lean towards personal attacks on the original poster. That's not what myLot is about. Again, thanks for offering your take on things and for joining in.

It was a delay of an hour. Not something worth getting his knickers in a twist about. Why are you being rude to me? It may be a humorous quip to you but I found it offensive. Thanks for joining in anyway. :)

Shame on Dolly Parton thinking that inconveniencing her by having her meeting an hour earlier is more important that inconveniencing many people by making them meet later. Those that see this as an issue about which is more important Children's literacy or council business have missed the point. This is about the arrogance of stupid show-off celebs that insist they cannot be inconvenienced by rescheduling their appointments at the expense of inconveniencing many people. Gross selfishness, gross self-indulgence. However, not all of us worship at the cult of celebrity all the best urban

I see, forgive me then for accusing you of worshipping at the shrine of celebrity, I see now it is only Ms P you worship. Whilst much maybe said against the behaviour of councillors it is not, usually, on a par with that of celebrities and being a lot poorer than celebs they cannot afford good PR agents and other panderers. Therefore, I still think it is far more likely that it was Ms P that demanded the time. Your view may be somewhat biased as you admire Ms P. I, on the other-hand have little regard for either and am thus a more dis-interested observer. all the best urban

Urban sweets you know we have had different opinions before and discussed them and I respect that you express your opinion , usually articulately and sometimes point blank when needed but I really think your response earlier in this post did your intelligence and convictions any favours. I think in this instance also that you missed the point - do you honestly think that it was Dolly Parton who insisted on the timing of this meeting - I think you will find it was the other council members and 'dignitaries' who arranged the meeting for this time and they after all are the ones who would have known the council meeting was due to take place - do you honestly think that Ms Parton should have known that the meeting was being delayed or that it was because of her? Come on mmy friend you know better than that - you usually think your point of view through thoroughly! As for the comments this thoughtless councillor made they were derogatory and although a lot of women wouldn't mind this being said in jest without a large audience these comments were made to international reporter - well I know I would take offense at that - how do you think he would have felt if she commented on his willy in the international press? xxx

Urban sweety I know you have some council experience and so do I and your council runs far more efficiently than most from the sounds of it! Also from my experience when there are visitors they are give a selection of times that are suitable and they work from there - I don't know why you assumme it is more likely to be Miss P who insisted on this time rather than the council members or dignataries - specially when these so called dignataries usually feel that the world revolves around them. As for me worshipping at the altar of celebrity I am afraid you are very wrong, I worship one person and that is my God and creator and I am usually quite cynical of celebrity , rather I admire Ms Parton for her proven track record in business and charitable organisations, the work, time and effort she puts into many areas and tries to make this world a slightly better place when she leaves than it was when she started. As for her physical attributes and her so called use of them - you can bet if she tried to cover or hide them then the press would still have made much of them, and they are after all god given and not made - she would have had to mutilate her body and cut them off for the media not to focus on them. Hope this response finds you well sweety xxx

Dolly Parton has been such a generous celebrity for so long, it is too bad that the conflict had arisen. Surely it was not her personal doing. I hope the inconveniences and issues can be resolved without further embarrassment for either party.

Well honey I saw Dolly Parton being interviewed on tv at the time and she laughed off the silly remarks and was passionate and well informed on why she was here! I have to say that if you know soeone and how they would feel about comments like this then ok but to do so to reporters that are going to quote you worldwide it will not humiliate that person (although it might hurt their feelings a little) but humiliate theselves - it makes the councillor look really stupid, inarticulate and quite sexist - I guess he will have been mocked a lot for his comments. As for the meeting being held up for an hour I know they sometimes take longer having cups of tea and biscuits before a meeting starts. xxx

Sadly, a lot of these people who have a position on council or otherwise in the public arena have a very high opinion of their importance...they are sadly mistaken of course. And yes, I feel the issue of the meeting being held up was simply an excuse to sound off his mouth to the fact that this lovely lady was going to be there. He would have been better served to welcome her and the program she was advocating.

Cretin indeed even that is a word to good for the man..9 to 5 is that the only song he could think of to represent Dolly Parton? She has such beautiful songs out since then where has this man been? Did he just come out of a coma? Had his head up his butt for all these years? Dolly isn't just a singer, she has her hands in tons of things going on. She has her Park DollyWood, she has a cosmetic line, her song writing, singing, acting, Which I have seen several movies she has starred in that was good movies, she has a wig line, and many many other things like this program for children's literacy. She is taking time out of her busy shedule to to this out of the goodness of her heart and for someone to belittle her that way just makes me and I am sure others a bit smiffed. Cretin indeed..They should be glad she is taking the time to help not scoff at her. Maybe she should pay this guy a special visit..lol akk that squawking because a meeting will be late.. I could understand if it was totoally canceled but it isn't..I feel sorry for the guy and what a butt he is going to look like because of his atitude..

I am sure he did get his come-uppance. Funny thing you should say he is a right Burke...That is my last name..lol. I seen Dolly Parton on a program the other day a program from almost 50 years ago when she first started out and she totally looked different her hair was light fussy brown and she stiill sings as good today as she done back then. I bet he has to write a retraction or apology for his actions(words). It would be best anyhow. Better then getting dirty looks for his actions(words). Well,I bet next time he will think twice before sticking his foot in his mouth..

How ignorantly rude, those bigots! If it wasn't for the children, Dolly should snub them! How dare they, they are little men of little importance, she is a wonderful talented lady who's got more talent in her little finger than they have in their big fat bodies. She's coming all this way and because they're insignificant meeting has been put back an hour? In other words they'll be an hour late on the golf course! And as for that comment about 'cups' hmmm I know where I'd like to put a big heavy cup right on his xxxxxxxx (can't you tell Wolfie is very grouchy this morning!) xxx

You know, any time someone says something to the effect of "I don't actually know anything about XXX, but..." what follows is going to be ignorant, opinionated, and stupid. Mr. Mannion has not let us down. What really stood out to me, though, is that no mention is made of what planning was made for Dolly's visit. Was there really the need for someone there to check the social calendars for every single area for miles (or kilometers rather, sorry,) around, and to keep from upsetting every one of them? Plus, she is not purposely imposing on that particular meeting, it is only being held up because some other members (who happen to know anything at all about her,) actually want to meet Dolly. Since he is going to be present at the meeting, after he sits around for a whole hour, maybe he could use the time to read a book himself, and read that old adage about remaining silent, and being thought a fool. Finally, Mannion even admits they have too few meetings already. Sounds to me as if he's looking for a scapegoat to blame their poor record on. Or was that Dolly's fault too?

Literature for children is a good idea, but one must arrange meetings so another meeting is not inconvenienced. Personal attacks are not nice, but why did not Dolly Parton write ahead and arrange a meeting that would not interfere with the Council meeting? It may not be a big deal to someone who has time on their hands, but these councilors do not go home or live a life of leisure. They probably have other events to go to, not to mention their regular line of businesses. That councilor may have been rude, but he was right. If Wednesday was the only day, then her agent could have written or emailed sooner, so that another time could have been arranged.

I'm sure these fellows DO go home. And I'm sure they are not very hard done by. I guess we'll never know who erroniously scheduled the meetings to co-incide but I hardly see how Ms Parton and her staff can be blamed. In any case, there is no reason for anyone to be rude...these people should have diplomacy as part of their personality.

Hi Ms Tickle! Gosh, he is one rude and arrogant man. Not a gentleman and a well bred Englishman, huh? Although i do understand that there are so many important matters at hand but what is one hour to extend courtesy to a person whose advocacy is for the children. Surely that is no reason to be so discriminating and so rude. Well, his remarks just show what kind of person he is. Just my thoughts. Take care and have a nice day. :)
